ENGAGING & INTERACTIVE EDUCATION FOR ORANG ASLI, MARAN PAHANG
Helping the Underprivileged Community
Education is also one of the National Key Results Areas (NKRA), which was launched in 2009. With regard to the NKRA, the Malaysian government targeted that by 2012, all students would acquire the basic reading and writing skills after three years of schooling. By 2015, the Malaysian Government is targeting all children in this country to have at least primary education. The Orang Asli children are not to be left behind in the focus of national educational development. Enormous efforts have been made since independence in 1957 up to now which aimed to improve the standard of formal education to those who live largely in rural areas. We want to collaborate with Malaysia Outreach Volunteer Experience (MOVE). The is a non-profit organization that aims to empower young people to get involved in volunteerism and humanitarian; also to achieve, namely to strengthen the domestic economy by supporting the vulnerable groups in the B40 (Low Income) community. There are 3 pillars of MOVE: 1. Knowledge & Awareness 2. Attitude & Behaviour 3. Opportunity & Skills DevelopmentThis is to align to the national aspiration to commit the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Competitiveness, productivity, innovativeness and capability in management of new technologies in Malaysia will be determined by the quality of its human resources. […] In view of the challenges ahead, Malaysians should be well equipped with a strong base in education and training. (Government of Malaysia, 2012)”One of MOVE segmentation program is MOVE Edu; for the first time MOVE work together with Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) to provide engaging and interactive education for Orang Asli kids in Maran, Pahang. HRDF has sponsored a mobile library cabin that also can serve as class for the kids; HRDF also provide some allowance for the volunteer. The project timeline started from August 2018 until February 2019. Currently we have about 30 indigenous kids aged from 10 - 12 years old. We believe, this special gems need to be nurtured and to attract them with interactive educational approach which slightly difference from school teaching.
Overview of Issue / Background
There are 3 pillars of MOVE:
1. Knowledge & Awareness
2. Attitude & Behaviour
3. Opportunity & Skills Development
This is to align to the national aspiration to commit the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Competitiveness, productivity, innovativeness and capability in management of new technologies in Malaysia will be determined by the quality of its human resources. […] In view of the challenges ahead, Malaysians should be well equipped with a strong base in education and training. (Government of Malaysia, 2012)”
One of MOVE segmentation program is MOVE Edu; for the first time MOVE work together with Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) to provide engaging and interactive education for Orang Asli kids in Maran, Pahang.
HRDF has sponsored a mobile library cabin that also can serve as class for the kids; HRDF also provide some allowance for the volunteer. The project timeline started from August 2018 until February 2019. Currently we have about 30 indigenous kids aged from 10 - 12 years old. Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)
Although some Orang Asli education level now has change, in fact now they hold a doctorate degree however we would say it is hard to measure Orang Asli kids academic achievement as most of them have lowest grade of A, B and C and for some reason you cannot push hard on them, they just need another ways of teaching and needed some guidance and motivation to be good and to do good not just in academic aspect but also in ethical area which involve attitude and behaviour.
According to the Annual Report of the Department of Orang Asli Development or JAKOA (formerly known as the Department of Orang Asli Affairs or JHEOA), in 2006, there were about 147,412 Orang Asli living mostly in Pahang and Perak (Department of Orang Asli Affairs, 2006). However, 76.9% of the Orang Asli population remains below the poverty line. 35.2% is classified as living in hard-core poverty, compared to 1.4% nationally (Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2010). The national infant mortality rate is at 8.9 out of 1,000 live births, yet Orang Asli infant mortality rate is at a high of 51.7. The average life expectancy for Orang Asli is 53 years, compared to the national average of 73 years (Rusaslina, 2010).
For the past 2 months we observed, some of them can’t even solve simple math thought they should by now ready for UPSR examination; as such, it is not surprising that many of them fail to catch up with the national school syllabus and surely we have to hold them from dropping out from school. From 30 kids, we acknowledge 5 of them are fast leaner and excel in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mathematic.

- Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?
Yes. This entire experience with helping others in need has completely changed my way of thinking. It has impacted my life in more than one ways. I appreciate things more; try not to be selfish and I don’t buy unnecessary things just because. I’m the type of person who has to see things as a way of really understanding and learning, Since I had never seen a soup kitchen, other than on TV, my mind set didn’t know what to truly imagine how it would be. This was a very humbling experience for me and if you had asked the younger me about this may have impacted my life, it would’ve been a very different answer. As I grow up and mature, the little things in my life become so grand. I have learned to appreciate everything that I do have. This really was a body cleanse for myself and I cannot wait to participate and volunteer for more community service.
- Complete this section with a one to two sentence personal statement, suitable for use as a quotation, addressing how and why this project was valuable and what was the most important thing you learned as a result. (Indicate student’s name for quote attribution.)
- The smallest acts of kindness can mean the most. It’s true you don’t need to have an overflowing bank account to donate something worthy. Donating time by volunteering to help another person who in most cases, you don’t know can be one of the most satisfying things to do with your spare time.
- From helping raise children live in a safe and loving home, helping young adults find a place of their own, or even helping those get back up on their feet after serving time in prison .It is sometimes the smallest acts of kindness that make the most difference. Samaritans volunteers are constantly changing lives of the people we support in a positive way through these very activities.
