Overview of Issue / Background

Section I

In this project, the main project goal is:

  1. To increase the confidence level of student in speaking English
  2. Students gain confidence to ask question and speak English in class after the project.

Other fund-raising efforts are made. And it was a success such as online crowdfunding platform Actyvate for RM1100.

For the Speak Up! project,

  1. Accommodation securing and the problems of behaviour of international volunteers are the main issues. For budget wise, it does not show a lot of problems. But during there is a budget constraint happening during the last week of the project for transportation of the workshops. Therefore international volunteers are required to pay for a certain amount of cost.
  2. All volunteers are agreed to use English beforehand. Therefore communication between volunteers is not a big problem but they are facing the difficulty of communicating with the secondary school students using English smoothly.
  3. The workshops are executed well and too the activities going for the community service are going well. For the logistics and sometimes the food availability, it is not executed as what we planned.
  4. More than 115 people are benefited including AIESEC local volunteers, international volunteers who came from China, Vietnam, Turkey and Pakistan, secondary school students who are involved in the workshops, partners that are responsible to deliver the materials and education to the international volunteers.
  5. For this project, it would be carried out in a long term and it is sustainable. Indicators and monthly tracking will be carried out to ensure the sustainability and it definitely has a future to let people to experience the change with the direction of Sustainable Development Goal Number 4, Quality Education.

Section II

In this project, I learnt that the most useful thing is by contributing something valuable to people, the happiness that we can gain is far more than we take from the others. In the project, international volunteers are able to experience that by teaching the students and have interaction with the students during the school workshops. Other than that, the partners that are able to deliver the useful knowledge and education to the international volunteers are definitely a fruitful experience for both parties.

When the teachers see the students improve their English speaking skills and too their confidence in speaking English, they feel pleased to see that and they are thankful to us as well. The students too feel happy when they heard that they have a chance to get to talk to international volunteers (foreigners), they get to know more things what is happened of outside of Malaysia. These are things from the perspective of short-term. For the long-term, these initiatives will be accumulated and giving a good and big impact towards the secondary school students. Other than that, definitely teachers are very supportive and will want to continue to collaborate with us for the school workshops.

This project leaves a great impact to me as well, it teaches me how to communicate with the other people and how to come out with a plan to enable the initiatives to be happened. Other than that, it makes me to think that things should be taken step-by-step in order to achieve the big goal that I foresee in the future. No matter what it is, the “ripple effect” will be happening continuously if the direction is clear and everyone follows the pathway and continue doing the initiatives with innovation.

“Happiness is not just in materials, but through the kindness and determination to deliver to other people. Through enabling English speaking environment, Malaysians will definitely become a more advanced country which the students are satisfied with their efforts.”
