Let’s Share Clean Water

Environmental Protection

Kampung Lubok Kiulu Tamparuli is located at West of Sabah, Malaysia and approximately 3 hours from Kota Kinabalu centre (Figure 1). This remote area currently accommodates 18 to 20 families which consists of 16 houses and 2 paddy houses (Figure 2). However, the area is encountering muddy water supply after the occurrence of rainfall. Hence, villagers in this area are facing clean water supply problem as the existing water tank is not enough to supply daily use clean water for all villagers especially during drought. As the students of Civil Engineering from Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, we keen to improve and develop the area by carrying out water upgrading and filtration project to enhance water supply to the communities involved.

Overview of Issue / Background

Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

1. To provide clean water to the residents of Kampung Lubok,Kiulu

Water is the most important component of life. To provide a clean water to the residents of Kg. Lubok,Kiulu a water filtrationt ank will be installed to filter the water supply before being channelled to the villagers. The filtration tank will help to filter the incoming water which contained harmful substances from the high turbidity of water.

2. To fully utilize the sustainable water treatment technology

Utilization of innovative technologies, systems, components, processes, and management approaches in order to reduce risks and environmental damage. This is done by designing the water intake using local conditions and custom made the sedimentation/filtration tank/ storage. Working discussions (operation and maintenance) and task involvement with the villagers will be conducted and inputs or feedback by the communities also incorporated.

Project Details (Activities and Tasks)

1. Site investigation and community participation

Site visit should be carried out in order to find out the location of water supply and the condition of the water. The estimated time is three days. It is aimed to collect the information for our water filter system design and discuss with the communities and get feedback or paticipations.

2. Water filter system making

Committee member will make the water filter system with different layers consist of gravel, sand and activated charcoal which aimed to remove the particles, sediment and bacteria.

3. Water filter system installation

Before the installation, committee member and Jawatankuasa Kampung(villagers) will together carries out site clearance, excavation, and concreting foundation. This process will be assists by the villagers and briefing on water filtration system will be given.

4. Observation of result

Exiting water intake before installation and after installation or upgrading, the condition of water quality will be observed and recommends maintenance of the water filter.

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

From this project, the expected project outcomes are:

1. The villagers are provided with filtered and clean water with upgraded pipeline distribution.

2. The water quality at the selected area of project implementation, Kampung Lubok Kiulu, is improved.

3. Students are able to gain and obtain experience and knowledge which is valuable for future use especially in finding jobs.

4. Students contribute in community works.

5. The villagers obtained knowledges regarding the water filtrations shared by the students.

Section I

A. Project Goals:

The main purpose of this project is to provide clean water supply to the villagers in Kampung Lubok. The project also propose to install two water filter in order to filter the water supply before the water being channelled to the villagers

B. Other contributing fund-raising:

1. EcoCampus Management Centre EcoCampus Management Centre is the contributor of this project. A total fund worth RM 2000 was granted to this project.

2. Crowdfunding Project fund raising collected by group members. A total fund worth RM1200 was collected.

C. Project Details

1. Were there unanticipated difficulties? Budget constraints?

The unanticipated difficulties during this project is the hilly terrain of the road to Kampung Lubok, Kiulu. It was harder as there is road construction work in progress. But we are having difficulties when it comes of budget constraint. Even though, the budget is more than enough to support this project, but it takes more time to receive the money from the treasurer of UMS.

2. Language or cultural barriers?

During this project, we have not encountered any language or cultural barriers between our team and the villagers. It easier to communicating with them because they also good in using Bahasa Malaysia. The language of the villagers that always we heard is Dusun. They are using their language when they are communicating between themselves only.

3. What worked well? What didn’t work well?

The only problem faced during the project progress is transportation. Some of the project members are unable to visit the location due to the lack of transportation. However, the problem are solved by renting a car.

4. How many people benefited or will benefit from your project? Who are these people?

This project is to provide a clean water supply to the villagers in Kampung Lubok, Kiulu, Tamparuli, Sabah, Malaysia. 18 to 20 families benefited from the “Let’s Share Clean Water” project.

5. What is the long-term impact and sustainability of this project?

Is there a future for your project? In “Let’s Share Clean Water” community engagement project, the water filtration tank are constructed to removes particles from water suspension that affect the health of the villager. For that reason, zeolite are used as the filtration media to strains out the floc and the particles trapped within water. It also can reducing numbers of bacteria and removing most of the solid without the use of chemical aids. There is a future for our project. We want to use existing technologies such as solar energy, nanotechnology, and high-tech filtration to improve and strengthen filtering water efficiency and effectiveness. This project will offer many benefits to many residents living in remote areas, and they are away from some diseases caused by unfiltered water.

Section II

A. In several paragraphs, address each of the following questions:

1. How does or will your project contribute to happiness? Short-term? Long-term?

The "Let's Share Clean Water" initiative by supplying clean water to the residents of Kampung Lubok, Kiulu leads to happiness. Clean water is the most important thing in life. As a result, water filtration installed to filter the water supply before it channelled to each house in Kampung Lubok, Kiulu. Through drinking clean water In their daily lives, the villagers will live healthier and happy lives.

The project of installing water filtration to the villagers that remove contaminants occur in the water supply which harmful will affect the villager's health. It can be use in a long term life because maintenance can be undergo to the water filtration to maintain the effectiveness of the water filter.

2. Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?

The "Let's Share Clean Water" project has changed the way we think about the world because there are more people who do not get clean water in their daily lives. Furthermore, in some areas, there is no appropriate water filtration or clean sources of water to be used for human use. Therefore, more projects and initiatives must be carried out in areas without clean water supplies required on a daily basis.

Along with the project is happening, we recognised that the water supply used to channel for the villager’s house is clean when seen with naked eyes. But after doing some laboratory works, there are contaminants occur in the samples of the water supply. Besides, different age group has different level of endurance toward contaminated water. Thus, it is crucial to come out with a reliable design of water filter that could give out water of good quality as product.

B. Complete this section with a one to two sentence personal statement, suitable for use as a quotation, addressing how and why this project was valuable and what was the most important thing you learned as a result. (Indicate student’s name for quote attribution.)

“The completion of this project is our first taste of accomplishment, it is the first sip of clean water for the villagers. Above all, I learn that the simple act of kindness brings happiness to others.” - Ling Ka Hou
