LAB VACATION

Quality Education

It is known that nowadays the number of students who are interested in science stream is decreasing. Most of the students assumed that science is very difficult apart from the employment opportunity which is limited compared to non-sciences background graduates. This occurs due to lack of exposure of how beneficial and interesting science subjects could be. A reallife exposure of what sciences are need to be exposed to the community, Thus this gives us the idea to initiate this project which is to encourage PT3 students to consider science subjects when they are in form 4. So, therefore, we focus and target the after PT3 students for our project. This project will be held for three (3) days (5th – 7 th November 2019) at the Department of Chemistry, University of Malaya with volunteering a group of lecturers from the department. We are targeting 60 post-PT3 students from Klang Valley schools. 20 students will be visiting each day and they will be divided into four groups (5 students per group) where they will have the opportunity to visit physical, inorganic, organic and polymer lab in a rotation basis. Therefore, they will have broad experience in real-research exposure.

Overview of Issue / Background

Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

1. To support and enhance the number of science stream students at secondary school level

2. To embark the interest of students in sciences related subjects

3. To demonstrate how important and beneficial science can be in daily life as well as the future

Project Details (Activities and Tasks)

1) 20 students will be coming to the Department of Chemistry each day and they will be divided into 3 different groups.

2) They will have the opportunity to visit physical, inorganic and organic research lab in rotation basis where they will hand-on experiments.

3) Schedule is as follows. All three days will be using the same schedule with different participants.

4) Feedback form will be distributed to all participants for improvement purposes.

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

● Increase students’ interest in taking science courses.

● Intellectual input for students participating while waiting for their examination result.

● Building social networking for every participant of this program.

DETAILS

I.DIFFICULTIES AND CONSTRAINTS

Venue Constraint

Some of the laboratories consist of hazardous chemical hence they are not available. One laboratory can cater up to 30 students only.

Budget Constraint

It is difficult torent a bigger space as it isvery expensive costing up to RM4000 per day. This becomes a drawback as we need money to provide tent for the exhibitors and vendors.
