Organic Crayons
Arts & Culture
Crayons have been used in schools for more than a century and most of the crayons were made from paraffin wax (derived from petroleum) which takes decades or even longer to decompose or breakdown. This has become our concern as crayon wax isn’t biodegradable and it will leave a waxy sludge in our landfills. Thus, we come with an idea of using natural wax (beeswax) instead of paraffin wax to produce our non-toxic crayons. Nowadays, a lot of crayons brand in market using 100% natural wax such as soy wax, beeswax and vegetable wax and the price is quite expensive, therefore, in this project, by mixing the beeswax with treated waste cooking oil is to believe that numbers of crayons production can be increase hence, reduce the cost of production. The reason of using waste cooking oil as an additive in crayon making is because of the cooking oil is a major item used in Malaysia households. Normally, the used cooking oil is discarded. The impact of this waste when it is disposed to sewer system or even river and sea could cause an environmental impact on nature. This project will give an idea to recycle the waste cooking oil into something valuable and contributes the knowledge to the community in the sense of finding an alternative way to utilize waste cooking oil.

- Gain knowledge using candle making process since the process is similar.
- Getting advices from supervisor on the mixing ratio.
- Collaboration with the school to collect the used cooking oil.
- Awareness campaign about the impact of disposing the waste cooking oil.
- Promoting this project to the community near the school.
Phase 2
- Preparing the lab set-up to process the waste cooking oil to remove the WCO odor.
- Preparing the work flow of the crayon making (refer to Figure 1)
- The cleaning of waste cooking oils will be done with the guidance from supervisor.
- The making process is very similar to organic candle project as in Appendix A.
- Do elemental testing at UMP as attached in Appendix B.

Section I
a. This project is an idea to use natural wax (beeswax) instead of paraffin wax to produce our non-toxic crayons. This project will give an idea to recycle the waste cooking oil into something valuable and contributes the knowledge to the community in the sense of finding an alternative way to utilize waste cooking oil.
b. Other than the fund provided by KSF, we also do crowd-funding program and manage to get RM1,025.00. initially, our project aiming for a mass production since we wanted to do event involving students of SK Taman Merdeka, Melaka. But the school closed due to MCO, we reduce the scale by selecting some families to try our crayons. Therefore, the final budget was reduced to around RM700.00. We completely using the money from the crowd-funding.
c.
i. The most significant problem is the continuation of MCO and CMCO. Due to that problem, not only the school not open, we also not allowed to go back to our college. Since the team members came from different region, we communicate through WhatsApp to come with plan B.
ii. During our project, we provide the visual guidance in English. But when we communicate with the kids, we will use Malay language since the majority of the beneficiaries are Malay. There is one Chinese kid in our program. Since she cannot understand us completely, her parents do the translation for us.
iii. A lot of things happened smoothly after we come with another plan. As example, since the scale are reduced, we are not needed to be together. In our team, we divided task to work more efficiently. The process of purchasing is doing great since all items were received without any defect. The phase that is more challenging during crayon making process. A lot of trials and errors happened. As example, the colour not came out as we expected since it became dull and not pigmented. So, we have to buy another batch of colour pigments. Then, the ratio of oils and beeswax were wrong causing the crayons to not hard enough. Thus, I have to redo and try many times to get the best hardness.
iv. There were 6 kids in total. Some families share the crayons among siblings since the size of the crayons are big. But I believe in the future, there will be more.
v. In the future, I hope we can go back to our college. By going back to the college, we will have more convenient environment and apparatus to make our product. We will also do analysis and make improvements. We would like to have more colour in our set. The consistency in shape and hardness also can be improved. We also considering to make a DIY kit for those who interested to experience the crayon making by themselves. Therefore, there will be less oils discarded to the sewer system.
Section II
a. Our project will spread the happiness through our product. We believe that happiness may come as the parents are free from getting nervous of their kids swallowing crayons. It is common to see some parents are too scared to let their kids playing unguarded. If their kids getting sick just by swallowing the crayons, it will sure make them sad. So we hope to give happiness to both parents and kids using our crayons. In long-term aspect, we wanted to enjoy environment with less oil disposal to sea. Oils will form a layer and block oxygen from entering water. Thus, marine life will be threated. As more people aware of this matter, we hope less oils discarded recklessly. Hence, even marine life can live safely.
b. While doing this project, the thing that I realize the most is the love between parents and kids. Since I do not have any toddlers in my house, I always did not realize how protective parents can be. The parents from beneficiary asked questions about the ingredient mostly. This show how concern they are about their kid’s health. I learned to love my parents more and always look for the ways to save environment. It is because I wanted them to live in comfortable environment to repay their action in protecting me when I was a kid.
Always love your parents and nature because they always think for something best for your happiness.
