ROBOTICS CAMP

Quality Education

We are a team of IIUM Roboteam propose a project to do corporate social responsibility (CSR) to help the under privileged school related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) learning tools. With the practical approach like robotics that we want to bring, we hope that students are more interested and easily understand the theoretical knowledge that they learn in school. Most of the applications of robotic technology to education have mainly focused on supporting the teaching of subjects that are closely related to the robotic field, such as mechatronics, invention, robot programming and robot construction. Most of the application available have used the robot as an end or passive tool of learning activity, where the robot has been constructed and programmed. We relate the robotics with a non-robotic related subjects, such as mathematics and physics. The robotic kit also have a module to actively guide in the development of the educational activity. The robotics approach are presented based on a collaborative and constructivist learning environment, where the robot is able to act as an interaction mediator capable of managing the interactions occurring among the working students. We propose a research to develop multi-programming interfaces for the educational robotic kit. The main purpose of the invention is to increase the problem-based learning curriculum and the practical application of engineering concept learned in theory.

Overview of Issue / Background

We are a team of IIUM Roboteam propose a project to do corporate social responsibility (CSR) to help the under privileged school related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) learning tools. Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

  1. To help the under-previledged school to get an access about robotics.
  2. To increase the problem-based and project-based leaning curriculum in school.
  3. To make STEM Robotics accessible to lower secondary students with proper materials and tools to encourage interest in STEM subjects.
  4. To provide robotic Training for Teachers, Training for students on a periodical basis in-line with STEM.
  5. To observe and evaluate on the effectiveness of existing module based on the findings through teachers and students training for further improvement to be then applied in schools curriculum throughout Malaysia.

Camp for students

- 2 days of Robotics Camp to be conducted by us, IIUM Roboteam members. The camp will be organized continuously for 2 months due to many school that we are going to approach.

- There will be 7 facilitators going together to run this project. The facilitators will be divided to 6 groups, one group one facilitator to teach about robotics related to their subject learning in school.

- They will be learning:

  • Servomotors are angular speed controlled through PID controlling algorithm implemented by the robot firmware which provide a sufficient motion accuracy even under a certain degree of mechanical load
  • The flexibility of kit and simple machine for a realizing a spread variety of construction with simple mechanism.
  • The concept of force, acceleration and deceleration related to the speed and movement of robot.
  • The understanding on power and generation of electrical energy such as battery consumption, calculation of power, energy, voltage and current.
  • Learn about software environment of basic C (Arduino).
  • Mini competition for what they have learn along the camp.

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

We hope that all our objectives will achieve successfully. We hope no matter what background are the students from, robotics learning is a practical thing, an easily achieved and no longer belong to privilege schools.

We want to do practical learning. It is not an easy task, it takes a long time for the robotic kit and module development. With all our hope and courage, we will start with small camp / workshop. We really hope that we can get the fund and help those students, make sure they get an easy approach on supporting the teaching of subject related to STEM.

We want the students to be innovative and can make their own project for their daily use and help others.

We also hope that the students will participate in national and international level to give them experience and exposure about robotics. It also help to improve their self-confidence and teamwork.

Section I

The main objective of this project is to help the under-privileged school to get an access about robotics and increase the problem-based and project-based leaning curriculum in school as well as spread awareness about science and technology among secondary school students. There is no other fund-raising efforts were contributed for this project.

A tour around Selangor was conducted to approach secondary schools around Selangor. 8 schools were targeted to accept our offer to conduct Robotics Camp at their school for free. We manage to get 6 schools out of quite a number of school approached. The Robotics Camp was conducted by the facilitators and committee members of IIUM Roboteam itself. The Robotics camp was conducted for 2 months continuously during weekend. The Robotics Camp was about teaching around 28 students for each school that was visited the basics of Robotics by using our Robot Educational Kit that was developed by ourselves. The students was divided into groups of two to three students. Two groups will be handled by a facilitator for the construction of the robot and module teaching. The students will compete with each other by group that have been assigned in mini competition that was conducted daily. The winning groups were awarded during the end of the Robotics Camp followed by closing ceremony with motivational speech by the leader of that particular Robotics Camp and feedback speech by the school teacher as well as by a student representative. After two month tour to the school, they were invited to come to IIUM for our one day boot camp. Three to four students were invited plus a teacher. During the boot camp, the students were taught on how to pitch their ideas to attract investors, how to write proposal and paperwork, and guided them to realize their ideas with the theme that was set to them. There was no unanticipated difficulties to us, everything was under control. The budget allocation was enough for the whole program. There was no language or cultural barriers

The flow of the program went as planned. The school students and the teachers had given their full cooperation to make the flow of the program smooth without any problems. However, due to a bad weather condition such as haze, a few school cannot accept our offer to conduct Robotics Camp in their school. There were 168 students that we targeted will be benefited out of this program. Furthermore, it also helped to attract the school to initiate their own Robotics Club which will benefit more students than the targeted number of students. They are secondary school students from form 1,2,4 and 6 joined this program.

Through this program, the students will be more aware towards science and technology as they were exposed to the general idea of science and technology. They are now able to understand that the basic of robotics are applicable in their daily life and this will enhance their creativity and skills to make innovations that later on will benefit the community in the future. Therefore, our community awareness about science and technology will increase and one day would be as good as the western community nowadays. With this project, we have made a contact and connection between schools and higher academic institutions. Hence, we can help the schools to establish their own Robotics Club through consultant or mentoring. In the future, we are targeting to spread our robotics knowledge to all the schools around Malaysia through our Robotics Camp with improvised module and kit.

Section II

By this project, it will increase the students’ enthusiasm in learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) subjects with the exposure towards robotics and innovation and it also will help the government to achieve their target which is 60% of secondary school students taking science stream subjects by year 2020. Besides that, this projects will help the students to solve their own daily problems as well as the community by making innovations that will help the community which lead to happiness. With the impact of this program, it will attract more students to become inventors and expert in robotics as well as gaining more supports towards this kind of program.

After going through this program, we realized that robotics knowledge is not only for the higher institution student but it can be introduced as early as 13 years old. Thus, they will have good understanding in robotics knowledge before entering the higher institution. Besides that, teaching Robotics and innovation to the younger generation will inspire them to become inventors and entrepreneurs that will improve our local technologies to be at the same level as the western countries or even better. We believe that it is our duty, to provide them the platform to discover their hidden talents while nurturing interest in Robotics and innovation with the knowledge that we have about Robotics.

“This Robotics Camp is very good because Malaysia is currently lacking in term of technology, thus exposure in the early stage is needed so that we can make robot as good as in the other developed countries like Japan, The United States, and China” Muhammad Zailan Bin Mohd Zeen, form 4 student from SMK Gombak Setia.
