We[Care+LovetTeach]=WCLT

Helping the Underprivileged Community

Project WCLT is an initiative to help orphans in Kuala Lumpur to improve their education. Recent news revealed that almost 60% of Malaysian students did not have the ability to read nor to do basic mathematics after SPM. Also, we believe that, every child in Malaysia deserves a chance for a betier education. Therefore, for first pilot project, we are hoping to help orphans in Kuala Lumpur to improve themselves, not just in education, but also in level of confidence, self-esteem, loves and above ail, to become a better person in the future. This project will be using students from iocal universities and it is hoped that, we are able to get at least four different educational institutions to make this project a success. These institutions will rotate amongst themselves every week to come to the selected orphanage and spend time with them. We do realize that, students in university have high commitment with their assignments, projects and hence, by participating in WCLT, they can learn something new which will be beneficial for them but at the same time, to contribute back to the community.WCLT is not only focusing in education, but we are hoping to give the children any assistance that they need, We will be giving a support system for the orphanage i.e buy exercise books, stationaries, maintaining the orphanage in good shape, share the loves and even our time. WCLT has high hopes on this project because it involves students from local universities/educational institutions and we believe that, this kind of background will give positive impact to the orphans to excel in their lives. We also believe that, every student has hidden potential in him or her to be a successful person in the future. By collaborating between four education institutions to look after one orphanage, it is going to be challenging but then, the first step would be the hardest. As long we understand our objectives, commit to this project and work as a team for the sake of these children, things will, eventually gets better.

Overview of Issue / Background

Project WCLT is an initiative to help orphans in Kuala Lumpur to improve their education. Recent news revealed that almost 60% of Malaysian students did not have the ability to read nor to do basic mathematics after SPM. Also, we believe that, every child in Malaysia deserves a chance for a betier education. We do realize that, students in university have high commitment with their assignments, projects and hence, by participating in WCLT, they can learn something new which will be beneficial for them but at the same time, to contribute back to the community.

WCLT is not only focusing in education, but we are hoping to give the children any assistance that they need, We will be giving a support system for the orphanage i.e buy exercise books, stationaries, maintaining the orphanage in good shape, share the loves and even our time.

Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

Our objectives are:

  • To improve the level of education amongst the selected orphanage. For the first few months, we are hoping to teach basic knowledge in education for them. This incudes reading and basic math.
  • To create a friendly-environment in orphanage for education to take place

Most of the orphanages in Kuala Lumpur do not get enough financial support from the Welfare Department to support themselves or the provide the facilities in orphanage. Therefore, we really hope that, we would be to provide at least small amount of tables and chairs, and draw some murals on the wall and hence, inspire these children to learn and ta excel in education.

  • To give support system for the children.

These orphans do not have support system from anyone except their guardian (which normally a woman
aged around 50s-60s), and to give a support system to everyone in orphanage is a tough job. Therefore,
by being there, we're hoping that, at least we can be their brothers and sisters whom they can talk to if
they have prablems, whom they can share their stories at school, whom they are eager to meet every
weekend. Love, is what it takes to unleash the hidden potential in these children.

Project Details (Activities and Tasks)

For our first pilot project, we are aiming to recruit at least 10 students from each education institution. That means, we're going to have at least 40 volunteers to help us to execute this project. Out of 10 volunteers each week. For the first week we will be dividing them into two groups to in charge for Saturday and Sunday. The program shall start at around 10am in the morning until 6pm. Our basic activity is to help these children with homework, school projects, discussion and at the same time, to motivate them fo never give up in life. After the first week, the program would be only on Saturday. Obviously, we will be facing different level of education amongst them i.e some of the children might be in lower secondary school, primary school or upper secondary school. The way that we will tackle this problem is to create a small circle consists of 2-3 children with one volunteers as a brother/sister. Through this method, the center of attention is narrowed and they will be more focused to learn. Also, it will be easier to conduct two-way communication between the volunteer and the children.

After the first session is done, the volunteers will be focusing in covering certain topics that the children have learned in school. This is very important, as we do not want them to fall behind. As mentioned earlier on, we would like to help the orphanage as well so that the process of learning will run smoothly. After lunch, we're planning to do some activities such as drawing and painting specific murals on the wall, i.e number's multiplication, motivational quotes and etc. Even though this looks like a small bit of effort, however, it is crucial for these orphans, as it will motivate them in some ways.

Volunteers for Sunday will continue whatever tasks have been left a day before. Every week (on Sunday, after lunch), we planning to conduct a test so that, we can monitor the performance of the children. Having said that, by monitoring the performance of the children, it is hoped that, our appreach as ‘elder’ brothers and sisters will inspire them not to give up and keep holding on. Before the day ends, we would like to spend times playing with them ie football, traditional games, puzzles because it is very important for these children and the volunteers to have a good rapport and at the same time, they will at least, realize that, there are certain groups of people who are still care for them and they are not alone!

At the end of the program, volunteers will conduct one educational visit for these orphans and it is hoped that, by doing such thing like this, these children wil! be more motivated to excel.

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

We hope that, all the orphans will be getting at least C (>50%) in their monthly test conducted by the
volunteers. Also, we're hoping that, they will be more motivated to learn and excel in education. Apart
from that, sufficient amount of tables and chairs can be provided for the learning session to run as
smoothly and te help these children doing their homework in daily basis.

Section I

WCLT Project WCLT has been established as one of the pilot projects of BeliaSiswa in July 2014 at Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah, Kajang Selangor. The project aims to help students, mainly orphans in Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah, who are being left behind in education. Additionally, this project has been awarded a grant, approximately RM 9,000 from KHiND Starfish Foundation and has received massive support from KHiND Holdings Berhad since then. WCLT is an acronym for the word; We Care Love and Teach which represents the project’s main objective, which is to provide the support systems that are needed for the orphans to improve their education. We bring the elements of ‘love’ and ‘care’ to our students before we get into teaching when executing this project. This is because we believe that these two elements are very important for the long-term sustainability of the project and the impact on the students.

In addition to that, Project WCLT is trying to enhance the basic knowledge of 3Ms (Menulis, Membaca, Menilai) within the 35 students that are staying in Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah by having interactive lessons every week. Also, this project has recruited approximately 90 tutors (60 out of 90 tutors are permanent tutors), which are mostly university students in Malaysia with different backgrounds to participate in this noble cause. This project has been executed in three different phases; Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 and is still ongoing until now.

The expansion plan for Project WCLT will be done next year (year 2015) in Negeri Sembilan and Banting, Selangor. It is hoped that this project will attract more university students to participate and make a difference in education, especially for those who are left behind. We believe that education is a long process and we’re up for the challenge!

Section II

This project has touched so many hearts and souls for the past three months. We do understand that it is not going to be easy to tackle massive problems especially educational problems that are happening in Malaysia right now. However, we really hope that this effort will create a huge ripple effect not just for the primary and secondary students who are having difficulties in learning, but also for the university students to start taking actions to make our society a better place to live in. As mentioned earlier on, it takes months probably years to have the right modules to be implemented for the respective projects, and we’re up for that challenge!

We have seen massive improvements in terms of reading, writing and reasoning amongst the students at Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah Kajang and we will be expanding this project at other locations next year because we want to help more and we want more people, (university students, corporate sectors and the society) to get onboard. Together, we can achieve more!

Also, it has been ups and downs when executing this project. There were mistakes and there were victories. But through thick and thin, we have learned so many things through this amazing project and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to KHiND Starfish Foundation for always supporting and believing in our potentials. We have met a lot of young, talented and amazing youths who wanted to make a difference in the society! And thank you for letting us to be part of Project Happiness. We are so glad!

We hope that “ ONE DAY EVERY CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTAIN GOOD AND EXCELLENT EDUCATION REGARDLESS OF THEIR BACKGROUNDS”
