Section I
1. Summary of project goals (two sentences)
The goal of Jurustingkap (Silat) was to produce a short film that highlights the cultural and artistic value of silat as both a martial art and a storytelling tool. The project aimed to preserve traditional heritage while engaging modern audiences through cinematic expression.
2. Did other fund-raising efforts contribute to your projects? What were they?
Yes, small-scale crowdfunding and personal contributions from the production team helped cover equipment rentals and post-production costs.
3. Provide details about how your project actually worked.
The project was executed in three phases: pre-production (scriptwriting, casting, and choreography design), production (filming silat sequences and dramatic scenes), and post-production (editing, sound design, and promotional strategy). Collaboration between silat practitioners and the film crew ensured authenticity and cinematic appeal.
4. Were there unanticipated difficulties? Budget constraints?
Yes, budget limitations restricted access to high-end equipment and extended shooting days. Weather interruptions also delayed outdoor silat scenes, requiring adjustments to the filming schedule.
5. Language or cultural barriers?
No significant language barriers arose, but explaining silat’s symbolic elements to non-practicing crew members required additional time and cultural briefing.
6. What worked well? What didn’t work well?
The integration of silat choreography with cinematic storytelling worked very well and created strong visual impact. However, time management during production was challenging, and limited funds restricted marketing reach.
7. How many people benefited or will benefit from your project? Who are these people?
Approximately 200 people, including the cast, crew, silat community, and general audiences who watched the film, benefited. These include students, cultural practitioners, and local viewers interested in heritage-based films.
8. What is the long-term impact and sustainability of this project? Is there a future for your project?
The film serves as a cultural archive and educational material for silat appreciation, inspiring younger generations to value traditional art. There is potential for expanding the project into film festivals, workshops, and possibly a feature-length adaptation in the future.
Section II
In the short term, Jurus Tingkap (Silat) brought happiness to the team by allowing us to collaborate creatively while celebrating our cultural heritage. The process of choreographing silat moves and translating them into cinematic storytelling gave the cast and crew a sense of pride and accomplishment. For audiences, the film provided an engaging experience that combined entertainment with cultural education, sparking curiosity and appreciation for silat.
In the long term, the project contributes to happiness by preserving silat as a cultural legacy and making it accessible to future generations through film. It becomes more than entertainment, it acts as a reminder of identity, values, and resilience rooted in tradition. By inspiring younger audiences to connect with their heritage, the film promotes cultural pride that extends beyond individual satisfaction into collective happiness.
This project has shifted my perspective on the importance of storytelling as a tool for cultural preservation. I realized that film can serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that something as profound as silat can continue to thrive in today’s digital era. Working on Jurus Tingkap has also taught me patience and adaptability, especially when faced with budget and time constraints. Most importantly, it deepened my respect for silat practitioners, as their discipline, philosophy, and artistry go far beyond physical movement and it reflects a way of life.
On a personal level, the project reminded me that challenges can be overcome when a team shares the same vision. It has strengthened my confidence as a creator and encouraged me to pursue projects that balance art, culture, and social impact.
“Through Jurus Tingkap (Silat), I learned that storytelling is not just about creating a film but it is about preserving culture, inspiring people, and passing values to the next generation. The most important lesson I gained is that art becomes truly meaningful when it connects the past with the future.” (Muhammad Shafiq Izzuddin)
