Rural Area In-need Support Essential

Helping the Underprivileged Community

One of life's essentials is water. Humans use water in their daily activities. It is quite challenging if there is no access to clean water. Imagine needing to start the generator every time you wanted to use the water pump in order to receive clean water. They undoubtedly struggle to obtain clean water, and purchasing oil to run the generator costs a lot of money.More than 20 homes in Kampung Pulau Sepanggar experienced this. Our goal is to make reclamation easier by incorporating solar technology to power water pumps. In order to make it simpler for people to go about their everyday lives, our goal also involves providing every home with a source of clean water.

D. Difficulties

  • Facing wild animals like monkeys
  • Uncertain weather that day where we were stranded for two hours due to the heavy rain
  • In our group no one has skills in electricity and there is no technician to help us during the installation of the solar system
  • Since our destination is Sepanggar Island, we need to take a boat to get there and the cost for the transportation is RM200.00. Transportation is not included in the fund, so we collect the money within our group.
  • The location is too far from the city so we need to be fully prepared so that nothing is left behind.

E. Language or cultural barriers

We had a good engagement with the villagers. The person in charge is very helpful by sharing a lot of information with us. They are happy with our visit to the village. The villagers also treated us with food and beverages when we were done with our installation.

Project Implementation Process

This project is completed successfully. Starting from the presentation of this project to the actual implementation, we encountered many challenges. However, thanks to the guidance and suggestions from the team members, villagers and supervisors, we managed to overcome all challenges successfully. Although we have a short time for fund-raising, we managed to reach the target. When installing the water pump, we have several challenges but with teamwork and the help from the villagers we are able to finish this project in time. Lastly, we have handed over the responsibility of maintaining and taking care of the water pump to the villagers. We are grateful to have been able to provide the villagers with a clean water supply and to contribute to the reduction of the cost of obtaining clean water. The villagers no longer suffer from lack and difficulties in obtaining basic resources. We would like to thank all those who contributed to the fund raising process and to MSF who gave us the opportunity to help people in Pulau Sepanggar.

f. Beneficiaries

The main goal  of our project is helping the villagers of Pulau Sepanggar to have easy access to clean water (200 people from 89 families). In rural or remote areas such as Pulau Sepanggar, electricity is unreliable therefore this solar water pump will help to provide them clean water at a lower cost, because they don't have to purchase oil and run the generators. In addition, because solar water pumps are powered by sunlight, a renewable energy source, therefore they are energy-efficient and more environmentally friendly. Solar water pumps produce clean energy and have minimal environmental impact compared to their pump powered by fuels.

g. Post-project

This project is our first attempt at installing a solar water pump. All planning, design and installation of the water pump are our own but with help and guidance from our supervisor, supplier and   from our own learning. In addition, all the design process is based on our site visit to Pulau Sepanggar and some information from the villagers. We have gained knowledge and experience from this project and we hope the villagers of Pulau Sepanggar are happy with the outcomes.

Section II (a)

How does or will your project contribute to happiness? Short-term? Long-term?

In a community without access to power or water, installing a solar water pump can have a major positive impact on happiness in the short and long terms. The community's water demands are immediately met by the solar water pump, guaranteeing that people have access to clean, safe water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The instant access to water encourages attendees at the mosque to adopt better hygiene habits. This involves doing ablutions, or wudu, prior to prayers, which improves worshippers' comfort and hygiene. A community's health and well-being can be enhanced by a decrease in waterborne illnesses brought on by consistent availability to clean water. An instant sensation of relaxation and contentment may follow from this. The time and effort that were previously spent on lengthy trips to reach water sources will be saved for the residents, especially women and children who could be in charge of collecting water. This may result in more free time and less physical effort, which will lift their mood momentarily. As for the long term memory, Installing a solar water pump not only gives the community control over an essential resource but also offers a sustainable alternative. This empowerment promotes resilience and self-reliance, which enhances long-term satisfaction and the growth of the community. A dependable source of water improves the mosque's entire experience of worship. In the long run, this creates a happy and cheerful atmosphere that helps worshippers feel connected to one another.

In conclusion, the construction of a solar water pump at a mosque helps to increase community empowerment, education, and health in the long run while meeting the mosque's urgent water demands. The community's general contentment and well-being are greatly enhanced by this blend of immediate comfort and long-term growth.

Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?

Yes, it has changed the way I think about the world. This project exposes me to the problems that the less fortunate population faces on a regular basis. As students observe the difficulties and reality of living in such situations, this first-hand experience deepens our empathy. A great sense of purpose may be generated by taking part in a project that directly improves the lives of others. It may be personally satisfying to know that our efforts are contributing to the well-being of a community. A broad range of abilities are frequently needed for project execution, from technical know-how and project management to problem-solving and community involvement. People in charge of or involved in such initiatives have the opportunity to grow and improve their abilities in a variety of fields. Connecting with a community, learning about its issues, and working together to find answers promotes a sense of belonging. Developing ties with people in the community may be personally fulfilling and help to provide a more comprehensive understanding of social issues. Leading or participating in a project provides an opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership skills. Making decisions, solving problems, and guiding a team contribute to personal and professional growth.
