Theraplay 3.0

Helping the Underprivileged Community

Persatuan Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal Johor Bahru (PPKTAJB) is a home for the special needs community. The organisation was established in 1990. Currently, this charity home accommodates 185 beneficiaries with the age range from 10 to 98 years old. It provides permanent shelter, individual care, health well-being and self-management to the beneficiaries with multiple incurable disabilities such as autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, mentally challenged and learning difficulties.  Through the interview with the manager, Mr Jeeva, we found that the main issue they are facing is the lack of the number of physical therapists to assist the beneficiaries’ activities. Hence, they only manage to spend most of their time indoors and the space they spend most of their time in is lacking in equipment. This condition is insufficient to improve their physical and mental health conditions. To solve this issue, Theraplay 3.0 team hopes to assist them by promoting survival skills as a support to their daily needs and become less dependent on staff’s assistance through improving their motor skills and social skills. Other than that, providing an indoor green corner is another effort applied to encourage the beneficiaries to get closer to nature and enhance their well-being. By looking into their special needs and sensitivities towards their environment, the sensory experiences will also be another main focus in our design consideration.  In conclusion, we propose designs and activities to enhance the special needs children’s understanding of the world and practice independent life by applying therapeutic approaches hence creating a conducive and healing environment for them.

    1. Difficulties
      1. Financial Discrepancies: Inadequate synchronization between preparation stages and funding disbursement. Advisors and committee members resorting to personal funds to advance material procurement due to cash flow misalignment.
      2. Operational Hindrances: Constraints in prototype invention due to insufficient experimentation opportunities and resources.

    1. Engagements and Patience

Initially, the interaction with children with disabilities presented significant challenges for the Theraplay 3.0 team. Understanding the children's intentions was difficult, and there was an initial apprehension about moving closer to them due to uncertainty. However, as the team gradually engaged with the children, they realized that the children harbored no ill intentions.

This realization prompted the team to initiate conversations, inviting the children to participate in various activities. Slowly, through patience and effort, the team managed to break the barriers and build a connection. Eventually, the children not only joined in the activities but also enjoyed collaborating with the team, creating an environment where everyone could partake in and relish their collective efforts.

    1. Project Implementation Process (Difficulties and Overall Experience)

The implementation of Projek Theraplay 3.0 faced initial challenges as team members encountered difficulties gathering due to hostel constraints and holiday periods. This situation led to a sense of helplessness and tension within the team as the available workforce was inadequate. Despite these hurdles, the team remained resolute in their commitment to the project. They focused on their tasks, undertaking various processes such as material procurement and strategizing for the targeted play and module designs. Fortunately, as individuals started returning to the university, a collective effort emerged. Everyone exhibited high levels of cooperation, contributing to the seamless flow of the project. Eventually, with renewed teamwork, all targeted tasks were completed successfully.

The project's initial stages were marked by setbacks arising from logistical issues and limited manpower due to various constraints. However, the team's determination and unwavering focus on the project goals allowed them to persevere through these challenges. Through meticulous planning and dedicated efforts, including material acquisition and strategic discussions, they managed to sustain progress. The turning point came when individuals gradually returned to the university, leading to a resurgence in collaboration. This renewed energy propelled the project forward smoothly, enabling the team to accomplish all targeted tasks effectively.

    1. Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of Project Theraplay 3.0 primarily consist of 185 individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as Down syndrome, autism, and other cognitive impairments. These individuals often face challenges in learning, speaking, and reading. To cater to their needs, the team devised a range of innovative solutions, including interactive sensory boards, ball drop games, target play, and module play. These activities were specifically designed to augment their sensory perception and improve their motor skills, fostering an environment conducive to enhancing their sensitivity and reflexive abilities.

Moreover, beyond the direct beneficiaries, the project aimed to raise societal awareness during its fundraising activities. Through these initiatives, volunteers had the opportunity to interact with the underprivileged community directly. This firsthand experience not only allowed them to connect with these individuals but also served as a catalyst for continued motivation. The volunteers were inspired by their interactions, fostering a desire to persist in assisting and supporting the underprivileged in their future endeavors.

    1. Post-project

Following the success of Project of Happiness 2023, the Theraplay 3.0 team plans to disseminate the accomplishments widely. They aim to showcase this impactful program to university students through school news and social media platforms, ensuring a broader understanding of both the community involved and the Theraplay 3.0 initiative. Additionally, the team envisions continuing this positive momentum by carrying forward the tradition with Theraplay 4.0. They aspire to engage more individuals from the younger generation, absorbing fresh perspectives and energies to actively participate in future volunteer activities, thus perpetuating the spirit of community engagement and support.

How does or will your project contribute to happiness? Short-term? Long-term?

Project Theraplay 3.0 exhibits a long-term positive impact on the happiness and well-being of both the community and the underprivileged children involved. Firstly, the project introduces new activities and a diversified living experience for the children, ensuring they have access to engaging, stimulating activities within the therapeutic garden and through the interactive sensory boards. Over time, this exposure provides them with varied experiences, enhancing their overall happiness by breaking the monotony of their daily routines and offering enjoyable avenues for growth and development.

Secondly, this initiative fosters societal acknowledgment of the fundamental right to happiness for everyone, especially the underprivileged community facing substantial challenges. It advocates for compassion, patience, and support towards this community, highlighting the importance of caring for those facing adversities. The project's emphasis on extending care and creating a more inclusive environment promotes a culture of empathy and understanding, cultivating a society that values and prioritizes the happiness of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.

Moreover, Theraplay 3.0 aims to build a harmonious community that treats children with intellectual difficulties with courtesy and respect. By fostering a positive environment that embraces these children and their challenges, the project endeavours to establish an inclusive and supportive atmosphere by creating a fun and safe environment. This holistic approach not only benefits the children directly involved but also contributes to shaping a society that values diversity, promotes empathy, and encourages the acceptance and respectful treatment of those facing intellectual disabilities. Ultimately, the project aspires to create a culture of understanding and support for individuals with special needs, contributing to a more compassionate and harmonious community overall.

Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?

Projek Theraplay 3.0 has profoundly influenced the team's perspectives and personal growth. Firstly, engaging in this project has enlightened the team about the pressing needs of children with disabilities, instilling a sense of compassion and fostering a genuine desire to continuously support and learn about this community. Witnessing the impact of their efforts on the lives of these children has motivated the team to remain updated with the community's news, driving them to seek further ways to contribute and provide ongoing support.\

Moreover, the project served as a transformative learning experience for the team, imparting valuable lessons in maturity and structured program management. Through this initiative, they learned to approach tasks in a systematic manner, effectively presenting their ideas to diverse audiences, and honing their collaboration skills within the team. This experience has equipped them with essential skills, including effective communication and teamwork, which will not only benefit their current endeavors but also serve as invaluable assets in their future endeavors within society. Overall, Theraplay 3.0 has not only expanded the team's understanding of societal needs but has also equipped them with practical skills and a heightened sense of empathy, instilling a commitment to continued support and development within the underprivileged community.
