Happiness For The Living

Environmental Protection

There is an issue currently in Perhentian Island, Terengganu, which is too much domestic waste. This program mainly planned to help minimise waste being transferred to the mainland as the state government doesn’t provide a landfill for them as a site for the waste disposal in the island as it will affect its beauty. Hence, they are transferring all the domestic waste from the island to the mainland. It stated that the three primary islands in Terengganu are Perhentian Island (the project site), Kapas Island, and Redang Island with an estimated 500 tons of waste as of 2016, transferred to the mainland. It doesn’t only cost them a lot of money to move all the trash to the mainland. Still, it also affects the local community as the domestic waste is only transferred occasionally. It causes an unpleasant smell, and it is also risky for the local community to help move the trash to the mainland.

Overview of Issue / Background

There is an issue currently in Perhentian Island, Terengganu, which is too much domestic waste. This program mainly planned to help minimise waste being transferred to the mainland as the state government doesn’t provide a landfill for them as a site for the waste disposal in the island as it will affect its beauty. It causes an unpleasant smell, and it is also risky for the local community to help move the trash to the mainland.

Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

i)              To empower the local community in Pulau Perhentian to know how to manage their waste as well as helping them in improving their daily lives.

ii)             To assist in solving the waste management issue in Pulau Perhentian.

Project Details (Activities and Tasks)

The main activity for the project is creating a compost site on the island. This project aims to create a bio-pond, which uses the Black – Soldier Fly (BFS). The end product of the compost would be organic fertilizer. The Black – Soldier Fly (BFS) is a non – vector fly, unlike the normal houseflies, which causes humans to have health issues. The task that will be carried out on the island is to construct a small scale building for the local community to put in their daily food waste and the waste from the hotels and resorts on the island. There is provided land for the team to build the building as well as the bio-pond..

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

The project's expected outcome is mainly the organic compost produced by the black soldier fly and the larva that can be sold to the people who are farming.

Section I

  1. Summary of project goals with two sentences.

One heartbeat saying we are Malaysian.

  1. Did other fund-raising efforts contribute to your projects? What were they?

Yes, we’ve got support from our University and the Jabatan Perikanan Daerah Besut. They support us more on logistics like food & transportation. Jabatan Perikanan provides us boat from the jetty to the island and hostel for us to stay. Some students from Kelana Siswa also came down to assist us. Thus, we gain more manpower.

  1. Provide details about how your project worked.
  • We had 30 people all together in the project in the first phase, 28 students with three Residential College’s Felo Assistant and two lecturers join in to make the project a success. This phase is meant to have construction of the house of the flies, transfer learning and sharing information to ignite the hearts of the villagers to be part of the project. In this session, Our BSF team gave talk and did some demonstration on how to take care of the flies. The second phase only 15 people inclusive of Felo Assistant and lecturer. This phase is conducted two weeks after phase one to see the outcome of the project as well as to let the villagers see how the result should be.
  1. Were there unanticipated difficulties? Budget constraints?
  • There were unanticipated difficulties, it was the supposed to be monsoon there. Usually end of November would be the time of monsoon and this project allows the villagers having some business at this hard time.
  1. Language or cultural barriers?

All Malaysian are there. We’re anticipated to learn new culture and being part of the community is welcoming.

  1. What worked well? What didn’t work well?
  • The changes in the project’s insectarium & the place of the larva to do the cycles. We didn’t end up doing in cemented bio-pond, but in plastics. Of course, there are arguments, fights, but everyone goes back as one heart.
  1. How many people benefited or will benefit from your project? Who are these people?
  • The people in the Island, they are the local who needs some incomes during the monsoon.
  1. What is the long-term impact and sustainability of this project? Is there a future for your project?
  • It is a long-term impact toward the economy of the people who stays in the Island. This also helps them to get more income.

Section II

In several paragraphs, address each of the following questions:

  1. How does or will your project contribute to happiness? Short-term? Long-term?
  • This project is a long-term project where we had transfer learning and few villagers are interested on of and currently, they are the one who’s in charge and are still in charge with us. We say that it is a long-term project because the people there would be benefited the most. This will also help the villagers to gain more knowledge that will constantly help them. The villager was very happy when we came there, we didn’t get any issue interacting with them. Due to Pandemic, we also have followed the current SOPs for prevention measure.
  1. Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?
  • Yes, it does. Many of us thought that food waste stays as food waste. Here we also learnt many facts about the food consumption which leads to tons of food waste daily in Malaysia. This has opened our hearts and mind to not waste food, eat reasonably.

  1. Complete this section with a one to two sentence personal statement, suitable for use as a quotation, addressing how and why this project was valuable and what was the most important thing you learned as a result. (Indicate student’s name for quote attribution.)

Aidil Akmal – It was a fun journey but not an easy one but here I see teamwork. It rained on the second day, but everyone is there to make it a success.

Eva Cabrini Yuvinol – Seeing everyone happy are the key.

Aliff – This is a great work, looking forward to more.
