Section I
The project, Give A Chance is aimed to foster the relationship between refugees with
Malaysian and share the unique beauty of Malaysia’s culture to them. Besides, it will help them to have more opportunities to adapt in our country with the knowledge of our culture and more technical skills.
For your information, Give A Chance has received the sponsorship from Khind Starfish Foundation and IM4U and we do appreciate that this two company could involve in our projects and support us in monetary term to make Give A Chance a more successful project.
In Give A Chance, we targeted 6 centres of refugees and decided to carry out and provide them some educational activities such as teaching them traditional Indian dance, culture games and handcrafts. Before our event day, we opened a booth at UCSI University to collect book and stationary donations. Furthermore, we also get permission from Shah Alam Welcome Center to place our booth for one day to collect donations from the citizens. On the event day, the committees of the project and some facilitators are divided into three teams and each team will go to two centres which total up six centres. We taught the refugees on how to dance, how to play Batu seremban, how to sew, how to make string arts and also share our Malaysian foods with providing some food testing and traditional costume, for instance, cheongsam, baju kurung, and Indian sari. Additionally, we have offered laptop computers for centre PBCC Selayang and Zomi Education Centre Sg Long 1/ 3 that lacked of computer devices. Other than that, Give A Chance get water dispenser sponsorship from Nesh water filter company and able to install a proper water dispenser for Zomi Educarion Centre Cheras and Zomi Education Centre Jalan Talalla. To maintain the sustainability of the project, we provided a dance training lesson to the refugees and on 18th of December 2016, they are invited to be one of the event performers in a Light the Life charity run in UCSI University. Therefore, now they have the ability and gained self-confidence to perform on the stage in front of a large amount of audience. Last but not least, we also bought some furniture and basic stationaries for every centre as a blessing and support to the kids.
Why we choose to give a hand to refuges? Many people asked me. I answered them, “Because we are all the same with different religions, languages, skin colours, we are all human and so we should not detach them. If they do have a chance to choose their life on who they want to be, which kind of life they can have, they will not be a refugee now. They did not make their own decisions to be a refugee. The refugees have no choice, we do. “From that, I am more determined to do this project and raise awareness among the society. When I arrived the refugee centre, what I saw from the kids is happiness, they are happy that they are going to learn something new today, they are happy that someone visited them and willing to listen their stories and understand them, they are happy that we do not treat them as an outsider in our country. Even it is just a pencil as a reward, they appreciate it and jump happily and run to show to their teachers. They desire to study, to have education, but their identities are not allowed them to do so. Therefore, when we are there with them, they are always in the hyperactive mood.
