Racial Harmony
Performing Arts Club (PAC) is a students’ club in UiTM Johor, Segamat Campus which runs activities such as theater performances, singing, traditional and modern dance, flashmob, busking, bands and hosting on campus. These activities are aiming to help the UiTM students to develop their talents and interpersonal skills such as communication and leadership. In addition to the activities mentioned earlier, PAC also has conducted several community service programs and one of them was done at Kampung Pasir Mandi Temerloh, PahangPAC has the intention to introduce a traditional Malay dance which is to school children. The main reason for this is due to lack of awareness of youngsters nowadays on traditional dance. The “Kuda Kepang” dance was chosen for this purpose. “Kuda Kepang” is originated from Java, Indonesia and was first introduced here in Malaysia in the early 20th century by the Javanese immigrant. This dance is popular in the state of Johor. It is performed by nine to 15 dancers, all garbed in traditional Javanese clothes. The dancers are usually all men, though women dancers are not uncommon these days.

Section I
PART A
SECTION I
- Kuda Kepang is a traditional Javanese dance depicting a group of horsemen. Dancers “ride” horses made from woven bamboo and decorated with colourful paints and cloth. Generally, the dance portrays troops riding horses, but another type of Kuda Kepang performance also incorporates trances and magic trick.
- The aim of this workshop is to encourage students of other culture to learn and discover more about the Malaysian traditional dance by joining us in the Traditional Malaysian Dance Workshop: Kuda Kepang. We are working towards the enrichment of knowledge that they do not have to be dancers and we hope for them to appreciate this heritage and learn the history.
- We had one other fund-raising effort to contribute more on our project, which is from Jakel. They provided us with sponsorship for fabric and textile that we used to provide for the dancer’s costume.
- The purpose of this project is to enhance cross-culture knowledge. Our target is to promote our beautiful culture to the world that is beyond ourselves. Based on this idea, we come up with an attempt to teach this traditional dance to other community. One of the difficulties we faced was people’s perception of this dance having a mystical background such as people with low spiritual value can easily being possessed. Besides that, language is another barrier that we faced. The children are Indians and none of them spoke fluent Malay and so we had a difficulty in communicating with them as they don’t clearly understand us. Fortunately, the teachers were always there to help us communicate. However, from our observation, the children had a very enjoyable time and were keen and showed interest and were very excited to learn the dance. Other than that the teachers were also eager for us to make our weekly visit to conduct the workshop. We received calls twice every week asking whether or not we were coming. As for our budget, we have our own treasurer for this project. All the cash in-flow and out-flow was recorded and organized perfectly.
SECTION II
- We, volunteers believe that this Traditional Malaysian Workshop: Kuda Kepang does gives happiness to us, the students from the first time we visited the school up to the end of this project. The short term kind of happiness is for the students and the staff from SJK(T) Ladang Gomali who had first contact with this dance for the first time. From the day we called ad proposed our intention that is to have the school’s students to participate in this project, they were very excited as they get to learn new type of dance from a different culture. From the first meeting, the students were eager to show us the dance that we taught them in the last lesson, what they’ve been practicing it for a week by themselves, and of course we were proud and happy to see how much improvement they’ve made and how they helped each other in order for everyone could catch up the steps of the Kuda Kepang dance. For the long term happiness, we believe, we brought happiness to the Indian students from SJK(T) Ladang Gomali and the community. The students are enable to continue this legacy by teaching the future generations of the school to continue the effort in making Kuda Kepang dance known by society. This shows that this project of promoting culture and art captures the attention of the community and they awareness about Kuda Kepang dance. This project we held really made a difference on how we perceive the world. We never realized how much joy we can share with other people just by sacrificing a bit of our time and energy. Throughout this project, the volunteers developed a solid bond or relationship with the Indian students. They opened up our eyes, that despite the growing issue between races in Malaysia, we can still stand united and live in peace under the same sky, upon the same soil, in one country, Malaysia. The volunteers could not show enough gratitude to Khind for providing us with a platform for us to be able to implement this project with such success plus having the outcome much more than we anticipated.
- Happiness is to be shared. Through the spread of smile even for a little while. As children, we never felt the fun of dancing and moving ourselves to our music. But to see and have other children enjoy that much fun doing so, we felt as if there’s nothing more amusing.
