Teach The Needs 3.0

Helping the Underprivileged Community

Every year, there are approximately 10 candidates from Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi, an Institute of Moral Rehabilitation, register for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, SPM. Sekolah Tunas Bakti is an Approved School institution for the education, training and detention of children established or prescribed under section 65 (approved schools) of the Children Act 2001. All candidates are under Court Order under Paragraph 91 (1) (f) (sent to an approved school or Henry Gurney School) Children Act 2001. However, these candidates do not have proper resources to revise, including textbooks and exercise books. Besides that, lack of educators is one of the reasons since  they do not have teachers to guide them. We would like to help them pass SPM subjects through lessons tutored by college students. We will also provide 10 sets of textbooks, reference books and practice books as study material. We understand the importance of their opportunity in taking this exam because it promises them a better prospect in life in terms of job security, networking, and dignity. This is our noble effort in providing them help that their environment could not because we believe that everyone deserves a second chance in life. We are confident that the effort put in to run this programme will provide them with a broad exposure to the importance of seeking knowledge in the future.

D. Difficulties

  • Find a suitable time for both UPM volunteers and Sekolah Tunas Bakti trainees for teaching and learning sessions.
  • Find a suitable book rack for a large numbers of book
  • Preparation for teaching and learning session where to understand the level of understanding of SPM candidates in the earlier phase as they does not have any examination
  • Transportation and time constraint to assemble and prepare the book rack

E. Language or cultural barriers

We had a good engagement with the trainees at Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi. The difference is when the level of understanding towards a certain topic is different from one person to another person. By tutoring in one-to-one basis it helps SPM candidates to understand better towards the topic and volunteers able focus on one SPM candidate only.

F. Project Implementation Process

Overall what went well for the project was that each of our team members was clear on their respective tasks and this made the whole project implementation go smoothly and efficiently. Besides, the full cooperation and trust given by our partner, the representative of the Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi gave us a lot of help and support for the project coordination. We were pleased that all the children and the staff were satisfied and happy with the project outcomes. Last but not least, the Teach The Needs 3.0 project successfully raised the amount of crowdfunding and at the same time encouraged public support and taking care of the special needs community and their needs.

On the other hand, it would be better if our team could have a book rack installation earlier. This is because the book rack we bought earlier does not fit all the reference books that we bought. Therefore, the need to add more book racks. Besides, we faced some difficulties in finding suitables time for teaching and learning sessions as both organisations had different plans on calendar. However, we managed to figure out another book rack and plan out suitables dates for this program.

G. Beneficiaries

The main goal of our project is to prepare a SPM reference book to 10 yearly SPM candidates in Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi. These 10 candidates are able to do a self revision even without a tutor with them. Internet constraints limited their online sources. Thus, these textbooks, practise books and reference books help them to understand and do a better preparation for SPM examination later. The book rack provides a sustainable place where these students are able to use and place back the book besides giving opportunity to other students to study together.

During the SPM pathway sharing session, all 80 trainees in Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi are involved and benefited from these projects. They are able to have a better understanding of the pathway that they can go after graduating from these schools.

Furthermore, through this project, a great opportunity to practise communication skills we had learned in medicine and health sciences program subsequently knowledge application and contributed to the community. We are able to contribute back the knowledge we had to these trainees and are able to see a different perspective in consulting and communicating with different groups of people which help in future working careers.

H. Post-project

This project is our second project collaboration with Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg. Besi. Throughout teaching and learning sessions we are able to increase our communication skills and deliver the knowledge suitable  to receivers. Providing suitables study materials helps in increasing trainees' interest to study and improves understanding toward subjects they learn. In addition, this project gives an insightful perspective to the surrounding community and UPM students towards juvenile schools in Malaysia. We hope we can replicate this project to other Sekolah Tunas Bakti in Malaysia for better education and future of the trainees in these schools.

Section II

Section II (a)

How does or will your project contribute to happiness? Short-term? Long-term?

Teach The Needs 3.0 project brings happiness to the trainees in Sekolah Tunas Bakti Sg Besi through education. In the previous project, we learned that trainees in these schools do not have teachers who teach them on a daily basis like other schools. There are few yearly selected trainees given the opportunity to take SPM as their foundation in job seeking after being released. These trainees are needed to study by themselves despite having limited resources.

Through the Teach The Needs 3.0 project we decided to lead by hand by being a tutor and helping in providing SPM resources including textbooks with current syllabus, practises book and references book with total 500 books being donated. Thereby, trainees are able to do revision on their own during free time without needing to wait for a tutor and have enough sources to study. As these trainees have a restricted area to move, these books are located in the activity room where they can access these rooms even during night.

In the short term, Teach The Needs 3.0 project outcome is to support SPM candidates in having a good source to make a revision and have better preparation for SPM. whereas in the long term, this book source can be used for other candidates in the next batches.

Has your project changed the way you think about the world? How has it changed you?

Throughout the Teach The Needs 3.0 project, we learned that there are people who seek a second chance in their life and need others' help to do so. The judgemental view on the people who made mistakes should be avoided. When people, especially youngsters wrongly choose their pathway, guides are always needed. In these projects, there are people who come and support our work from the start until the end. Along the way, we were inspired by the other selected teams as all of us as youths are working on something in different fields to improve and help society. If possible, we wish to continue contributing something that we know and are capable of to society so that some of the underprivileged community can get some warmth from the world.
