River is one of the natural resources that provide numerous benefits to mankind. For instance, it may be used as a communication system of transport, marine farming, the fisheries, tourism and many more. However with the presence of contaminations, all these benefits will be vanished over time. Extensive pollution able to eliminate all sources of income including damaging life ecosystem. Moreover, dirty waterway can cause variety of diseases to humans, plants and animals.

Stream contaminations and pollution can be addressed with appropriate actions such as river cleaning programs on an ongoing basis and having river care campaign with the local community. The main objective is to nurture awareness of the youngsters of the cleanliness and beauty of the river.

“Clean River & Recreation” may be one of the inspiring ideas that will change the minds of the young people and local community towards positive thinking. This program will be carried out in collaboration with volunteers from Persatuan Penyayang of UiTM Cawangan Johor Kampus Pasir Gudang. Through the collaboration, it is hoped that it will be able to cultivate the interest of young generations to care on the cleanliness of the river. Furthermore, this program might be part of leisure activities such as playing remote control boat on the river. A growing number of young people play and involve with the game, the higher the positive impact of this group to care on the river since they requires a clean area for recreation purposes.

The objectives of this project are: 

• To expose to young generations the negative impact of stream contamination and water pollution 
• To increase awareness and encourage young people from the local community on the importance of clean river 
• To promote recreational activities with the community, especially youngsters

A total of 30 students will be involved in this project. All related activities will take 4 months to be carried out only on weekends. With the theme of “Clean River & Recreation”, the activities that will be held is based on 3 categories:

Awareness Activities

Duration: 1 month

Summary

The activities comprehend important aspects of to increase awareness to care of river. Giving exposure of the importance of clean river, the cause of waste presence, negative effects of contamination and the appropriate actions to resolve river pollution.

Cleanliness Activities

Duration: 2 months

Summary

This activity is the main purpose of the program which it takes longer duration to complete. The activities mostly cover cleanliness aspects and involving young volunteers. Wastes and rubbish found along the river will be collected using fishing boats and trawls. Teamwork is so much needed in this activity. For more enjoyable river cleanup activities, there will be weekly competition among the participants.

Recreational Activities

Duration: 1 months

Summary

Recreational activities include cleaning river and training for playing remote control boat. This activity will begin with two sessions. First session is an introductory session which will be held concurrently with second session, awareness activities. The purpose is to attract all groups of people to play in this area. As well as to introduce the village as clean village. At the end of this program will be a joint activity with the local community, a remote control boat competition

**Cleaning river concept

Using a water bottle used as a float to collect human waste. The cleaning cost is low and less risky. A rental boat will be used to make rounds.

• The amount of waste in the river can be reduced and make the stream clean
• Young people may continue to clean up the river as their leisure activities
• Turn the village area into a recreational area
• This program is expected to be continued in other region in Malaysia
