Teachers to the Rescue!

Quality Education

Recently, there were a number of cases involving babies and toddlers died at the nursery. One of the factors of this is due to difficulty of breathing. Besides, foreign body airway obstruction is quite common to happen among babies and toddlers. Other factors that lead to these may vary but a simple and easy act may change the consequence. Having teachers who are equipped with the skills of first-aid training and CPR may be rewarding as they may be the ‘first help’ to the children in need. One may be lucky if the nursery is located near to the hospital, but what about those located in the rural area in which the hospital is one hour away? A first-aid could act as the earliest saving action that may change everything. Some teachers may have undergone the course but a refresher course on this is not something wasteful. Considering this, we intend to hold a first-aid training to 30 teachers from 15 nurseries around Segamat, Johor as the result may work wonders. The nurseries cater to the needs of infants and toddlers (up to 4 years old). This training will expose the teachers on first-aid intervention. It will be a one-day training which comes with hands-on training where the teachers will be honoured with a certification at the end of the training. Eight fire brigade students from UiTM will also be involved as facilitators during this training. This training is hoped to contribute to the society as it may save lives of the innocence.

Overview of Issue / Background

Recently, there were a number of cases involving babies and toddlers died at the nursery. One of the factors of this is due to difficulty of breathing. Besides, foreign body airway obstruction is quite common to happen among babies and toddlers. Other factors that lead to these may vary but a simple and easy act may change the consequence.

PROJECT GOALS

As the organizer of Teachers To The Rescue, we as a team has set a few goals that we want to achieve at the end of this project which is, to create awareness on the importance of first-aid intervention among teachers working at the nurseries. Beside that, to equip and refresh the teachers on the first-aid training and last but not least, to ensure that the teachers can apply skills on first-aid training at their workplace.

OTHER CONTRIBUTION OF FUND

Beside getting our fund from KHIND Starfish Foundation, we, the organizing team of Teachers To The Rescue, also had other fund-raising which is, selling food and beverages to UiTM students and lecturers. We sell various kind of food and beverages such as fried kuey teow, ‘sagu gula melaka’, ‘sirap bandung’ and mango juice. We received big support from the teachers and students of UiTMCJ (Segamat). In addition, we also collect RM30 from each of the 30 teachers.

DETAILS OF PROJECT

This project went well on 24 November 2018 just as we planned but, we also faced some difficulties at the beginning as we have some budget constraints. But, we were so grateful, as beside of getting fund from KHIND Starfish Foundation, our own fund raising, we also get some contribution from the lecturers of UiTMCJ, (Segamat). As for the language or cultural barriers, although Dr.Martin P.Ponniah is a non-Muslim and he speaks English very well, but, we, the organizing team of Teachers To The Rescue could communicate with him very well as he is such a warm hearted and kind person, same goes to Mr. Adam Koh Guan Hong bin Abdullah. We could cooperate with each other very well. Furthermore, we could say that, this project worked very well thanks to the KHIND Starfish Foundation, the lecturers and students of UiTMCJ, (Segamat) and also the teachers of the nurseries. During the day of project, they were so supportive and happy from the start until the end of the project.

Moreover, our project give benefit to many parties, such as the teachers, children and parents. This is because, teachers that came to our project that day, they learned various kind of knowledge and skill about first-aid. Then, when they returned to their nurseries, they could implement the knowledge and skill that they have learned towards the children at the nurseries when any emergency or accident occur between the children. Beside that, not only the teachers could grab the benefit from this project, but our project also give positive impact towards the children and infants. This is because, not only they will be saved by their teachers if there are any emergency incident happen on them, but they could also learn a few lessons on what they need to do when suddenly, an emergency situation occur at their nurseries especially the children that age from 4 to 6 years old. For example, if suddenly one of their friends experiencing choking or had difficulties in breathing, they will quickly find and ask help from their teachers as they had learned before from their teachers, that if anything happen towards their friends, they should quickly find and ask help from their teachers. Lastly, as for the parents, they do not have to worry to send their children and infants to the nurseries as the teachers have been equipped with the first-aid knowledge and skill, and they also could handle the emergency cases calmly.

We, the organizer of Teachers To The Rescue are really sure that this project will give a long term positive impact as we are sure that this kind of project could reduce the cases that involve children and infants such as death due to choking on milk, death due to suffocating and many more. In addition, we also have planned to continue and expand our project in other countries in Malaysia so that many people could get benefit from this project and we think that the first-aid knowledge and skill is really crucial in order to prevent bad things from happening to the children, infants and also the adults.

Section II

Project For Happiness is the name that has been set by the KHIND Starfish Foundation. We believe that our project could contribute to happiness for a long term towards many parties, teachers, children, infants and parents. This is because, after the teachers attend our project they got the opportunity to learn among one of the most crucial knowledge and skill which is first-aid. They could implement their knowledge and skill towards the children and infants at the nurseries and they do not have to worry anymore about not knowing on what to do when there are emergency incidents occur at their nurseries. The children and infants also will feel happy and secure when they know that someone could help them if they involve in any emergency situation. As for the parents, they do not have to feel worry and unsecured anymore to send their children and infants to the nurseries after hearing many death cases occur at nurseries due to the negligence of teachers as they know that the teachers have the knowledge and skill about first-aid.

Our project has changed the way we think about the world, which is, as we all know, in this world, especially during this globalization era, anything could happen to us, and we are mostly influence by the highly technology gadgets, game and technologies that have been improved from time to time. This situation has slowly change us to be an irresponsibly person and do not have the eager to know about the things that seem to be not so important that could give a high and big impact in the future. If all of us could open our eyes and realized about the importance of first-aid knowledge and skill, I believe that people could change their mind set that anything is possible if we try our best to learn and implement new knowledge such as first-aid in our life no matter we are in the category of young or old people.

“The thing about learning how to fight is that, some of us are not born with that desire. They say some are born fighters, but they don’t usually point out that others just aren’t. Some of us are forced by life to take up arms and fight. Many of us are. The art lies in knowing when to wield those arms and when to put them down. I don’t think it is a matter of pretending to be ideally unharmed by life and untouched by darkness, because that is hypocrisy. Rather, I think it is a matter of being true to your truth and learning when to fight and learning when to be soft. Hopefully, our soft moments in life will largely outweigh, outrank, and outrun our fighting.” C.Joybell C.
