Section I

The goal of the project is to introduce and teaches the basics on the different types of fields to the children. They are also able to find their interest and highest potential in a particular field and duplicate to others.

The only fundraising effort that contribute to our project is a 3-Days Fundraising Project which done before this project, namely Be My Star Light, as known as BMSL. The purpose of BMSL is to raise fund and awareness for ELIMINATE Project, a project by Kiwanis and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. Other than that, BMSL also raise funds for 3 other orphanage home which is Agathian Shelter, Ti-ratana and Angel’s Home.

In this project, we spilt the activities to 2 homes, Agathian Shelter and Ti-ratana. The activities is positioned in separated days. The activities included are Ice Breaking, Art and Crafts, Business Stimulation, Medical Attention and Character Building Class. At the end of the day, we promise that the children enjoyed the process and also understand the purpose of the activities. For Business Stimulation, Medical Attention and Character Building Class, we appointed a professional and lecturer to conduct the activities. We as the volunteer co-operate with them and provided the best outcome. We also asked for the need of the orphanage and thus donating it to them in the form of materials.

The difficulties that we encounter is the available dates of the orphanages. Some dates are changed and the available dates do not fit with our study schedule. Even so, we still managed to fulfill most of the activities planned. There were no budget constraint during our project, everything went on smoothly. Since the children are all Malaysian, we are able to communicate through English and Malay, but for the Ti-ratana children, they are more dominant on Chinese, the local volunteers will need to act as the bridge for the foreign volunteers. The only thing that does not work well is the appointed dates. We take that as our lesson and we will make the appointment few more months ahead to avoid miscommunication and clashing of schedules

Overall, the project is a great success, providing the children an insight of what type of fields are available in the market and their interest on the fields. Few parties are benefited from this project. The children from Agathian Shelter and Ti-ratana are directly benefited from the project, being taught and introduction about some skills and knowledge. We also loosen up the stress of Agathian Shelter and Ti-ratana by providing education and donation to them. Furthermore, we as the volunteer learnt a lot during the project as well. We learnt to work as a team, being patient and also understanding the life of the unfortunates.

Even though we ended this project, we will still pay a visit to the orphanages in the coming months, to see their progress and also bond together with them. The activities provided in this project are knowledgeable enough to apply and duplicate for future use. The activities also briefly explain the subject of a particular field. This project can be done to other orphanages as well, to let all the children know and understand what and who they want to be in future.

Section II

CKI with the Agathians project aims to provide the children an insight of some fields available in the society and also an idea of who and what they want to be in future. This project contributed happiness in both short term and long term. As mentioned before, the activities in the project is both knowledgeable and duplicable, the children will boost self-confidence in gaining extra knowledge and able to brag on things they have done during the project, thus enhancing happiness in short term. Besides, every children owns a dream and occupation, by introducing and briefly explain a job field, it will encourage and motivate the children to chase their dream job and thus enhance long term happiness.

During and after the project, all my team member and myself feel shameful on ourselves for not appreciating our surrounding things. Visiting and planning activities that would impact the unfortunate children is a thing everyone should do at least once in our lifetime. The children in the orphanage do not have the privilege to be exposed and try many things that is available for normal children. Most of the schedule are fixed by the orphanage and they can only get what is given by the sponsors and orphanage management. Besides, living with many other children in the same roof and cause many conflicts and troubles, but of course, there are happiness and joy as well. We learnt to appreciate everything regardless of the cause and consequences, being thankful to what is given and provided in our life and we should always remind ourselves that there are many people out there who are way more unfortunate than us every time when we wanted to complain.

People are fated when they are born, fated by living environment, income group and family background, but fate can be changed by perspective. Changing a way of seeing things, appreciate more, complain less, spread the love, connect hearts. –Jeron Oon
