Did you know that a healthy digestive system is the foundation of daily vitality, indirectly regulating our mood and acting as the control center for our overall well-being? For the marginalized indigenous community, poverty and a severe lack of health literacy have fueled a silent epidemic of non-communicable diseases and late-stage Colorectal Cancer (CRC). To combat this crisis, a dedicated team of medical students from Fakulti Perubatan dan Kesihatan Pertahanan (FPKP), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, driven by a deep passion for preventative oncology and grassroots public health, is launching Project Senyum dari Perut (SeDaP): Usus Sihat, Komunit Bahagia. This targeted 3-day carnival will transform community health through zero-oil "SeDaP Chef" cooking workshops, interactive gut-health education and vital on-site CRC screenings using iFOBT kits. Rather than offering transactional charity, we are building a sustainable legacy by rewarding educational participation with high-utility daily items at our "SeDaP Stamp Redemption Bazaar" and training local youth to continuously monitor their village's health. Every ringgit you donate goes directly toward essential cancer screening kits, cooking equipment and community assets. Join us in empowering this village to prevent silent killers and cultivate true happiness from the inside out!
Our intervention is centred on one core truth: All disease and happiness begin in the gut. Often referred to as the body's "second brain", the gastrointestinal tract is the control centre for our overall well-being. The age-old saying "we are what we eat" is biologically accurate; our daily eating habits directly dictate our health.
A balanced gut microbiota does much more than digest food. It naturally regulates cholesterol (Vourakis et al., 2021), boosts insulin efficiency (Al Qassab et al., 2026) and acts as the body’s primary defence, housing nearly 80% of our immune cells (Wiertsema et al., 2021). More importantly, the gut directly controls our mental and emotional state. Remarkably, 90–95% of the body's serotonin, the literal "happiness hormone" is produced in the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria that also actively prevent stress-related ulcers (Terry & Margolis, 2017).
We are leveraging this science through localized action. A growing body of research indicates that traditional fermented foods are powerful tools for mental and physical health (Selhub et al., 2014). By teaching the community to prepare and optimize indigenous, probiotic-rich foods like Tapai Ubi and yoghurt, we are actively protecting them against physical lethargy, anxiety and depression. Ultimately, by balancing their gut microbiota through accessible dietary changes, we are directly promoting their physical vitality, mental well-being and sustainable, daily happiness.
To achieve this, this project has three main purposes, which is to educate, to identify and to empower.
- Education (The Primary Focus)
We address the root causes of disease through low-cost, engaging health literacy. For children, STEM-based activities—such as UV "Glitter Bug" handwashing and DIY soap-making to build lifelong hygiene habits to prevent soil-transmitted parasites. For adults, our focus shifts to practical nutritional education and symptom awareness. Through the "SeDaP Chef" workshops, we will teach families how to prepare fast, affordable, zero-oil meals using locally accessible, high-fibre produce (such as Kangkung, Bayam and Ubi Keledek) to combat their reliance on ultra-processed fast food. Furthermore, we utilize simple, highly visual tools like the Bristol Stool Chart. We educate adults on how to identify a "Type 3" or "Type 4" stool (the visual indicators of a healthy, high-fibre gut) versus the warning signs of gastrointestinal bleeding or chronic constipation, empowering them to monitor their own health before symptoms escalate into severe conditions like colorectal cancer.
- Identification (Concurrent Clinical Triage)
While improving literacy is our main goal, we concurrently conduct on-site triage to detect existing "silent killers", which is also aligned with National Health Screening Initiatives (NHSI). As these communities face immense transportation barriers, we bring the screening to them. By conducting basic blood pressure, glucose, and discreet Colorectal Cancer (iFOBT) screenings, we identify hidden health threats and arrange direct referrals with transportation to the nearest Klinik Kesihatan for continuity of care.
- Empowerment (Sustainable Dignity)
Rather than providing transactional charity, we empower the community with sustainable assets. We enable them to redeem targeted "SeDaP kits" containing overlooked necessities (lice combs, reading glasses, reusable sanitary pads, and sulphur soap) to improve daily quality of life through the Stamp Redemption Bazaar. Furthermore, we provide basic first-aid training and a fermented foods DIY course (Tapai Ubi & Yoghurt) to promote sustainability. The "SeDaP Chef" high-fibre cooking challenge will be employed to teach adults how to naturally protect their gut and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) using their own local resources. Equally important is the empowerment of the younger generation; interactive station games such as the Digestive Hopscotch and Healthy Harvest Toss are utilized to translate complex health literacy into engaging play, equipping children with the knowledge to build lifelong hygiene and dietary habits. Finally, a Training of Trainers (ToT) concept will be integrated by appointing SeDaP Masters within the community to ensure these health practices endure independently.
C) GOALS & BENEFITS
- Cultivate Gut Literacy for Happiness and Holistic Well-being
- To achieve a minimum 50% measurable improvement in gut, hygiene and dietary health literacy and happiness among 100 participants after the programme. It will be verified via pre- and post-intervention KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, Practice) surveys.
- Identify hidden health threat in KOA Batu 12
- To successfully conduct baseline NCD and Colorectal Cancer (iFOBT) screenings within the 3-day intervention period
.
- To successfully conduct baseline NCD and Colorectal Cancer (iFOBT) screenings within the 3-day intervention period
- Bringing long term impact
- Toestablish a self-sustaining health-monitoring network by training 10 local youth who agreed to be designated as "SeDaP Masters" via a Training of Trainers (ToT) module. We will equip these youth with clinical devices and our custom SeDaP App to track the vital signs of high-risk villagers for one month post-intervention. They could also continue to educate the rest of the residents who are absent from the carnival.
- To successfully mentor 15 households through the "SeDaP Chef" and Indigenous Fermentation modules, ensuring that 100% of these participating families can physically demonstrate low-salt, zero-oil, and high-fibre traditional cooking techniques by the end of the intervention.
Project SeDaP is a 3-day, action-packed health carnival at Kampung Orang Asli. We are replacing boring medical lectures with hands-on empowerment. Here is exactly what our team of energetic medical students, supported by dedicate lecturers will be doing on the ground:
1. Preventative Nutrition & Education
- The "SeDaP Chef" Challenge: We are hosting a massive cooking competition where 15 households will learn to prepare affordable, zero-oil, high-fibre meals using local ingredients to naturally protect their gut.
- Reviving Traditional Probiotics: We are teaching the community safe, hygienic fermentation methods to make traditional Tapai Ubi and kid-friendly Yoghurt, helping them build a natural defence against diseases.
- Gamified Health for Kids: We are making hygiene fun! Children will participate in DIY Soap Making (with toys hidden inside to encourage handwashing) and the "Digestive Hopscotch" to learn the difference between healthy foods and "gut villains."
2. Active Clinical Screenings
- Preventative Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Triage: We are bringing vital medical tests directly to the village. We will administer iFOBT screening kits to high-risk adults (aged 45+) to detect early signs of colon cancer.
- Baseline NCD Testing: Our team will conduct comprehensive on-site screenings for blood pressure, glucose and lipid levels, ensuring anyone with abnormal results gets a direct referral to the nearest hospital.
3. Long-Term Community Empowerment
- The Stamp Redemption Bazaar: We do not believe in passive charity. Villagers will earn stamps by participating in our educational booths, which they can exchange for high-utility daily items like medicated oil, tumbler, toothbrush and so on.
- First-Responder & Basic Trauma Bootcamp: We are training adults in crucial, life-saving emergency skills, including CPR and choking management (Heimlich maneuver) demostrated by our military students.
- The "SeDaP Masters" Legacy: Before we leave, we will appoint and train dedicated local youth leaders. We will equip them with digital trackers and medical devices (like blood pressure monitors) so they can independently monitor their village’s health long after the carnival ends.
Our ultimate goal is to transform indigenous community from a community vulnerable to "silent killers" into a thriving, health-literate village. By the end of our intervention, your support will help us achieve these measurable milestones:
Empowering 100 Lives: We will successfully engage and educate 100 indigenous residents (across 30 households), sparking a village-wide health movement.
A 50% Boost in Health & Happiness: We aim to achieve a verified 50% improvement in community gut health literacy, hygiene practices and daily happiness metrics.
Dietary Transformation for 15 Families: We will directly mentor 15 households to successfully master zero-oil, high-fibre cooking techniques, shifting them away from unhealthy processed foods.
Life-Saving Clinical Triage: We will conduct critical NCD and Colorectal Cancer (iFOBT) screenings for 50 high-risk adults, ensuring a 100% hospital referral rate for anyone with abnormal results.
100 "Earned" Dignity Kits: We will distribute 100 customized wellness (SeDaP) kits, containing essential items like medicated oil and hygiene supplies, not as passive charity but as earned rewards for completing health education modules.
A Sustainable Medical Legacy: We will leave behind a fully equipped safety network by certifying 15 adults in CPR and choking management and training 10 local youth as "SeDaP Masters." These youth will use our digital app to track their community’s health for months after the carnival ends!
