Delivering Happiness in Bario Sarawak 2026
Enhance Wellbeing
The Bario Highlands, an isolated plateau in the northern interior of Sarawak, is home to the Kelabit community. Despite its cultural significance, the region’s extreme geographical isolation—accessible only by light aircraft or a 10-hour trek via logging roads—has led to significant developmental gaps.Currently, the community faces limited logistical support, resulting in a lack of basic road safety infrastructure and inadequate waste management systems. Furthermore, the "youth-drain" to urban centers has left behind a vulnerable aging population at locations such as Rumah Panjang Ulung Palang, who struggle with limited access to consistent healthcare and essential mobility aids. This project is established to bridge these gaps through a multi-sectoral approach, addressing safety, environmental sustainability, health, and education.  The purpose of this project is to implement a holistic community intervention that addresses the immediate and systemic challenges faced by the residents of Bario.By integrating infrastructure development with social welfare, the project aims to:Enhance Public Safety: Mitigate the risks of road accidents along the 2KM stretch through the installation of professional road signage, addressing the limited road visibility often experienced during the monsoon season.Strengthen Social Safety Nets: Provide a dedicated Food Bank and voluntary equipment contributions to PWDs and senior citizens, directly alleviating the burdens caused by limited financial resources and physical isolation.Empower Future Generations: Deliver targeted educational aid and health screenings to ensure that, despite limited access to urban facilities, the Bario community maintains a high standard of health and academic potential.

The Bario Highlands, an isolated plateau in the northern interior of Sarawak, is home to the Kelabit community. Despite its cultural significance, the region’s extreme geographical isolation—accessible only by light aircraft or a 10-hour trek via logging roads—has led to significant developmental gaps.

Currently, the community faces limited logistical support, resulting in a lack of basic road safety infrastructure and inadequate waste management systems.

The purpose of this project is to implement a holistic community intervention that addresses the immediate and systemic challenges faced by the residents of Bario.

By integrating infrastructure development with social welfare, the project aims to:

  • Enhance Public Safety: Mitigate the risks of road accidents along the 2KM stretch through the installation of professional road signage, addressing the limited road visibility often experienced during the monsoon season.

  • Strengthen Social Safety Nets: Provide a dedicated Food Bank and voluntary equipment contributions to PWDs and senior citizens, directly alleviating the burdens caused by limited financial resources and physical isolation.

  • Empower Future Generations: Deliver targeted educational aid and health screenings to ensure that, despite limited access to urban facilities, the Bario community maintains a high standard of health and academic potential.

VISION:
To foster an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable ecosystem in the rural highlands of Sarawak, where isolated communities are empowered with equitable access to safety, healthcare, and education.

MISSION:
To bridge the urban-rural developmental gap in Bario through multi-sectoral community interventions—integrating infrastructure development, social welfare relief, and capacity-building partnerships to elevate the standard of living for the Kelabit community.

The project activities are organized into a comprehensive mission that addresses infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and community welfare through a hands-on approach. By integrating physical installations with social outreach under the Community Health and Wellbeing Programme, the team ensures that each sector of the Bario highlands receives targeted support.

The core activities of the project are outlined below:

  • Road Sign Installation (2KM): This involves surveying and installing professional, weather-resistant signage along a critical two-kilometer stretch to improve navigation and public safety for both residents and tourists.

  • Food Bank Distribution: Essential dry goods and nutritional supplies will be delivered directly to the residents of Rumah Panjang Ulung Palang to alleviate the high cost of living in remote areas.

  • Voluntary Contributions for PWDs and Seniors: This activity focuses on the handover of assistive equipment, such as wheelchairs and mobility aids, to vulnerable individuals to enhance their independence and quality of life.

  • Free Health Check-up: A mobile screening station will be set up to provide basic medical assessments, including blood pressure and glucose monitoring, with results shared with the local clinic for future follow-up.

The successful execution of this initiative is expected to yield immediate tangible results while fostering long-term systemic improvements for the Bario community. In the short term, the project will achieve significant physical milestones, including the completion of the 2KM Road Sign Installation. These outputs will be complemented by the direct delivery of Food Bank supplies to the residents of Rumah Panjang Ulung Palang and the distribution of assistive medical equipment to the elderly and persons with disabilities. Furthermore, the Free Health Check-up component will provide residents  with essential diagnostic data that are often inaccessible due to the region's geographical isolation.

The health and welfare initiatives aim to improve the autonomy of senior citizens, reducing the physical strain on caregivers and ensuring that the most vulnerable residents are not forgotten. Ultimately, this project serves to bridge the developmental gap between urban centers and the highlands, empowering the people of Bario with the safety and health to thrive independently.
