Overview of Issue / Background

PAVOFS is an innovative teaching aid for the 21st Century classroom to help students to improve their English and thinking skills. This innovative teaching method has won the Gold Award and the Overall Best Diamond Award in the Teaching Aid Competition 2015 in Langkawi on 17-18 December 2015. The kit has been copyrighted with MyIPO. The kit come with notes, exercises and a CD.

Project Objectives (Vision & Mission)

The main purpose of the project is to allow university students to lend a hand to orphans who are deprived of getting the best education because of lack of funding, opportunities, abilities and exposures.

Although the students at the university are deemed as volunteers for this community project, they actually gain experience and are able to give back to society by sharing their knowledge. More importantly, the orphans will gain by learning English in a fun and interactive way.

It is also in line with the government’s new MEB 2015-2025 to have all children in Malaysia as thinking individuals who are able to communicate in English. 

Therefore the specific objectives for this project are as follows:

  1. To enable students to reach out and help other students succeed in their studies.
  2. To introduce English activities for learning in a fun and interactive way.
  3. To create a learning environment using higher order thinking skills.

Section I

1.0 Introduction

This PAVOFS project is held at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Islam (PKAYIS) under Diploma Enactus student and volunteers from Universiti Teknologi MARA that wish to serve the community by teaching them English in a new way learning environment that is more fun. All of the students also can improving their self-confidence and communication skills. This project has received confirmation from the Khind Starfish Foundation as a potential to bring changes to the community.

2.0 Information Background

Objectives of the project:

  • Help to improve English proficiency for orphan in PKAYIS and instil the feelings of love toward English subject.

Help orphans to get extra knowledge about English and prepare them for examination Improving the self-confidence in Experiential Learning Skill.

3.0 Description of Evaluation

Based on the feedback form before and after that was distributed to the participants, the participants liked the program and are satisfied with the content of the program.

To assist orphans to learn English in new way of teaching that is fun and interactive.

Participants enjoy learning English and attendance for every night class is more than 90%.

Allow orphans to improve their English communication skill and gain their confident to speak in English

Orphans show their interest and every class that have game, they were willingly offer themselves to play and spoke English with high

confidence level 

To enhance and increase the self-confidence of the target groups in the world of

English.

There are participants said that their confidence increased after participating in this project because this project not only consist of learning theory but also practical learning and it can increase the level of communication skills among the participants.

4.0 Progress/ Problems

Orphans complained and said that they want more classes to improve their English and raise their confidence level. They started to speak English in real life and they started to love English and if this project continues it will ensure their ability to speak in public.

6.0 Recommendation

For improvement, the PAVOFS project need to be implement to more orphanage or even primary schools because this project is proven can increase proficiency of English and increase their confidence level to speak.
