Project Details (Activities and Tasks)

JARING Outreach activities are divided into three main categories which are:

1. Modules

It consists of two types which are module related to the education and module in enhancing the identity. All of the selected modules includes some of the school syllabus and the learning process are done in various way such as in the form of quiz or games to make it more interesting and lively. Those modules does not only aim to escalate their knowledge but also to develop and equip the orphans with leadership skills in becoming a leader, enhance their courage in public speaking, promote creativity in problem solving and inculcate good moral and spiritual value among them.

2. Mentor and mentee approach

Several modules will be conducted in a group to break the gap between committees and orphans as well as strengthens the bond between orphans themselves. As the orphans will be divided into groups, each group will be accompanied by facilitators throughout the programme. They will be guided on how to complete the tasks given in order to achieve objectives intended from each module. This kind of approach could give more chances for the committees to know the orphans well. Besides, the orphans can have the opportunity to voice out their views as well as enhance good relationship among them.

3. Art Project

The project will always include some decoration, gardening or painting at the orphanages with the caretaker permission as a small contribution to the orphanages. It might not to be an easy task as it will need a lot of creativity, expenses and energy. However, despite all of the obstacles, it is one of the JARING Outreach trademark with the hope that these small efforts can be a memorable moments for both parties and put a smile on the orphans’ faces.

Expected Project Result & Outcomes

It is with our high hope that this project will give a memorable moment and be beneficial for both parties. We hope that the orphans will be able to enhance their intellectual knowledge as well as to boost their self-esteem which is an important component to prepare them for their future. On the other hand, it also enables the committees to practice valuable skills such as facilitating technique and gain experiences on how to organize any project later on.

Section I

Introduction

The main objective of JARING Outreach which is to provide love and care as well as education to the children in the orphanage especially in the rural areas and to inspire the orphans through the activities and modules created. The programme had managed to achieve its intended objectives and gave benefits to the participants as well as the committees.

We are very grateful that Khind Starfish Foundation is the main sponsor for this project as well as there are also other fund-raising efforts done by the committees that contribute to this project. The committees from Caring Club IIUM had carry out fund-raising activities to get donation from the public. “Run for Orphans” is one of the project whereby its’ profit contribute to this project. Besides, the fund-raising box and individual donation from the public also contribute and enables us to run this project.

Challenges in conducting this project

This project was very successful because there was a great teamwork among the committees. It cannot be denied that this project is very challenging but we managed to overcome the obstacles and take it in a positive way. For example, we faced bad signal coverage at there and the distance to go to the nearest town, Pekan Ranau to buy some items for cooking which took almost 2 hours from the orphanage. We also had some difficulties to understand the orphans’ Sabahan dialect since they were very pure in their mother tongue. Nevertheless, it was not a big problem for committees in order to conduct the module activities successfully. Despite all the challenges that we faced, we managed to carry out the activities and modules successfully. We focus more on the activities to make sure everything is according to the plan because it is our main responsibility in accordance to the aim and objectives of this project.

On the other hand, we do not face any budget constraints because we have already planned it months before we conducted this project. Besides, we are very fortunate to be able to visit the house and meet the children face to face and their smile will always be the best memories for us. The journey was according to our planned and the people at the orphanage welcome us with open arms as they already prepared most of our needs.

The impact and sustainability of this project

The people that benefited from this project is the orphanages home and the residents because now we had announced to the public about that place which are in need for maintenances help. If we did not go and visit the place, we would only imagine the hardship without experiencing it for real. The public, especially the young generation would also get the benefit from this project because it can inspire them to join the voluntary jobs in their own community. As we know nowadays, there are many non-government organisation (NGO) that the young generation can join to gain experience such as by visiting the orphanages and old folks home. Indirectly, the country will also get benefit because it cultivates and encourage the citizen to have good values. Sometimes a small project will be a stepping stone to enable the country to encourage the teenagers to be caring and help the less fortunate people. It will eventually encourage them not to be selfish and learn to understand other people.

Every project obviously has their own aim for the short-term and long-term period. JARING, itself means “Jejak Anak Yatim Caring” and it search for orphanages outside of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur which are in need of help. Besides, one of the main objectives is to spend time with the orphans who live in rural areas and to inspire the orphans of a better hope of success in the future. In short term, it gives satisfaction of happiness to both parties as the committees feel satisfy to watch the children enjoying themselves and the children can also have fun during this program. This project also contributes happiness to the orphans as they were very enthusiastic and looking forward for us to conduct more games and activities with them. It is easy to conduct the modules because they were very cooperative and well behaved and indirectly we managed to achieved one of our goals which is to educate and make them happy in the same time.

On the other hand, for the long-term period, this project hopes that it will give an inspiration for the kids to strive in the education and to remember all the knowledge that have been taught from the activities conducted. It also brought happiness to our team as we are able to make the children happy and we have built a rapport with these children. Besides, it is a joy for us as we are able to exchange knowledge with the children. For instances, we can learn about each other culture and explore more on their daily routine. Next, we are also happy as we can also promote the awareness to the public about the orphanages and orphans in Malaysia. Last but not least, if we have the opportunity later on in the future we would want to visit this place again and see the development of this home.

Outcome of this project

Last but not least, this project provides many new experience and had a great impact to my life. It is an eye-opener for me because it is the first time for me see the hardship in real life and experience living in that situation for few days. Besides, not everyone is born fortunate so when we saw the way of life the children lived, we really should be thankful to god for all the good things He gives us. It makes me realize how grateful we are to have a comfortable life which we really should appreciate instead of taking it for granted. Thus, I learnt not to complained for the unnecessary or small matters, learn to make do of what we have and motivate me to be a successful person in order to help them later on. This is because being successful in education is very important and it is like a golden ticket that will help us to overcome a lot of obstacles in life
