Bald & Beautiful 5.0: Nationwide Cancer Awareness Movement
Bald & Beautiful 5.0 (B&B 2024) is a nationwide cancer awareness initiative by My Starfish Foundation Malaysia that brings together communities through symbolic head-shaving, fundraising, and public engagement activities. The campaign aims to accelerate cancer research, support patients and their families, and strengthen public awareness on early detection and preventive health. In 2024, the initiative continued to expand its reach across Malaysia, uniting thousands of participants in a collective movement of compassion, courage, and solidarity with those affected by cancer.
Fist launched in 2012, Bald & Beautiful has steadily grown into one of Malaysia's most recognised community-driven cancer awareness movements. Each year, it brings together individuals, corporate partners, and community organisations to collectively raise funds awareness for cancer-related causes while promoting a culture of empathy and health consciousness.

Funds raised through the campaign will benefit two key organisations dedicated to cancer research and patient support. Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) continues to play a leading role in advancing cancer research in Asia. Among its key acheivements are the development of a cancer vaccine that is set to enter clinical trials, large-scale genetic screening studies using Asian populations to identify cancer-related genes, and the creation of the largest genomic map of Asian breast cancers. CRMY is also actively developing new treatement approaches for head and neck cancers. The second beneficiary, the Sarawak Cancer Society (SCCS), has supported more than 1,650 children and their families since 2001. Founded by parents of children with cancer, SCCS provides holistic support addressing medical, financial, emotional, social, and logistical needs throughout the cancer journey.
This year's campaign expanded into a nationwide movement, with head-shaving solidarity events held across multiple locations, including Selangor Football Club, Nirvana Asia Group, Sam Poh Thong Buddhist Temple (Ampang), Super Group, Entrepreneur Group (Friends of VT), United Against Cancer, Powerwell Group of Companies, Sekinchan Alliance & KMI, Falcon Safe / Solid Horizon / Premier Channel, Batu Pahat, and the Grand Finale in Shah Alam. Each venue contributed through fundraising efforts, head-shaving ceremonies, and community engagement activities, reflecting strong collaboration between corporate partners, community groups, and volunteers across the country.
The Grand Finale held at Eco Ardence, Shah Alam, featured a 5-kilometre charity fun run that attracted approximately 2,400 participants, alongside a full-day community programme promoting health awareness and cancer education. The event began at 6.30am and included breakfast distribution, goodie bags, lucky draws, and more than 10 types of health screenings and cancer consultations. Participants also enjoyed cultural performances such as 24 Festive Drums, magic shows, and live entertainment, creating a vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere. Nearly 40 corporate and community partners supported the initiative, contributing to event logistics, sponsorships, and programme activities that strengthened the overall impact of the campaign. Selangor State Executive Councillor for Public Health, Environment, Climate Change and Green Technology, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who attended the event, highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare and regular screenings. She also noted rising concerns over obesity and cancer cases in Malaysia and encouraged the public to take proactive steps in managing their health. She further introduced the Selangor Health Card (ISS), which provides healthcare subsidies, screening support, vaccinations, and up to RM10,000 in annual hospitalisation benefits for eligible members.
